According to BBC News, “A number of homeless people have been sent out of Edinburgh to make way for tourists ahead of Taylor Swift performing in the city.”
“Shelter Scotland said several homeless people it supports had been sent via taxi to Aberdeen and Glasgow amid a shortage in accommodation, and one person was offered temporary accommodation as far away as Newcastle.”
BBC reported that Shelter Scotland referred to the instance as “a blatant injustice.” On the other hand, Edinburgh City Council is attempting to find “appropriate, alternative accommodation” for those affected by the matter.
Taylor Swift is set to play three nights at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield stadium: June 7, 8, and 9.
BBC also wrote, “The housing charity said people being declared homeless in Edinburgh who would usually be offered temporary accommodation such as hotels were being sent out of the city due to a severe shortage in accommodation caused by the concert.”
However, “There is no evidence of homeless people being removed from accommodation where they are already staying.”
Scotland Is Pushing Homeless Out to Create Room for Taylor Swift Fans
There have been updates that have cleared the air surrounding this accusation against Taylor. In fact, according to TMZ, “Shelter Scotland Director Alison Watson tells TMZ … the country’s capital should be able to host such a major event without creating a huge impact on the city’s homeless population. Alison makes it clear though — the org has no beef with Taylor.”
Instead, the shelter is blaming “decades of underinvestment in social housing.”
“Honestly, people love to blame celebs for everything,” one person wrote on X. “Taylor Swift’s not responsible for this, it’s just media trying to create drama.”
“I wish billionaires would end homelessness since governments refuse to,” another user wrote.
