Fans of the late Friends actor Matthew Perry may have been swindled. Scammers reportedly hacked the actor’s X account.
Currently, the Matthew Perry Foundation uses Perry’s social media to engage with people about their cause. However, bad agents hacked the actor’s X page encouraging followers to donate at a fraudulent site.
Taking to Instagram, the foundation warned followers not to fall for the ruse. They revealed that scammers hacked the account, discouraging people from donating to the fake sites.
“We have received reports that Matthew’s official X page has been hacked and is directing users to a fraudulent site soliciting donations via cryptocurrency,” the Foundation wrote. “Please do not donate to this site or share the fraudulent posts on social media.”
It continued, “MatthewPerryFoundation.org is the only website associated with the Foundation, as we are only accepting donations through this site.”
It appears that the Foundation got control over the account again. They deleted all of the fake posts with the last post being from October 26, 2023. It was two days before the actor’s tragic death.
“Perfect movies: 1) Back to the Future, 2) Midnight Run, 3) _________? -I’m Mattman,” the post said.
Matthew Perry Foundation Formed After Actor’s Passing
The Matthew Perry Foundation formed following the actor’s death. The Foundation’s mission statement is to help people who are experiencing an addiction.
“In the spirit of Matthew Perry’s enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction, we embark on a journey to honor his legacy by establishing the Matthew Perry Foundation, guided by his own words and experiences, and driven by his passion for making a difference in as many lives as possible,” the Foundation wrote in a statement.
Prior to his passing, Perry discussed his own battles with substance abuse. The actor was candid about his past shortcomings (via Fox News). “I never tried, but I did so many drugs at certain times that I knew that it could kill me,” Perry said. “But I would do it, but I never wanted to die.”
Addiction remained a battle that Perry often faced. The actor enrolled himself in rehab on 15 different occasions.
“It’s important, but if you lose your sobriety, it doesn’t mean you lose all that time and education,” Perry said. “Your sober date changes, but that’s all that changes. You know everything you knew before, as long as you were able to fight your way back without dying, you learn a lot.”
