The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a fatal crash near the Superdome that claimed the life of a man during the Super Bowl. NOPD officers reported per local outlet WGNO that they responded to a crash at the corner of Airline Highway and Monroe Street at 10:09 p.m. on Sunday.

An investigation found that a vehicle traveling north on Monroe Street collided with another car at the Airline Highway intersection after the driver allegedly ran a red light. The driver of the second vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries.
NOPD officers reported that the first driver was treated for minor injuries and later released. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity after completing an autopsy and informing his family.

A New Orleans sheriff’s deputy needed urgent medical care after being hit by a vehicle while directing traffic after Super Bowl LIX. The driver fled, and authorities are investigating.
The incident happened at 10:30 p.m. Sunday near Poydras Street and Convention Center Boulevard, a few blocks from the Superdome. While helping with post-game traffic, an East Baton Rouge Parish deputy was injured when a dually truck hit his ankle with a rear tire.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office said the deputy is expected to recover but may need ankle surgery. New Orleans Police found the truck an hour after the hit-and-run and took toxicology samples for the investigation.
The New Orleans Police Department also reported a stabbing in the French Quarter during Sunday’s Super Bowl celebrations. Local reports state that the incident occurred around 6:41 p.m. on the 1000 block of Decatur Street. Police confirmed that both the suspect and victim were injured in the stabbing and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Police identified Eugene Kolber, 31, as the suspect in a stabbing incident. Kolber allegedly threatened to stab the victim’s dog, prompting the victim to hit him with a ukulele. Kolber then stabbed the victim in the abdomen.
After treatment for his injuries, Kolber was arrested and charged with aggravated second-degree battery. He is being held at the Orleans Justice Center.
