In March, a clip capturing Stone’s response to Kimmel’s joke spread widely across social media. Numerous users, relying on speculative lip-reading, collectively deduced that Stone had labeled the four-time Oscar host a “p—k.”
However, it turns out Stone was completely unaware of this speculation.
“No! I didn’t call him a p—k,” she insisted to The Hollywood Reporter. “What did I say? I didn’t call him a p—k. I wasn’t upset with him at all. I’ll have to look that up.”
Not Only Did Emma Stone Not Mind the Jimmy Kimmel Joke, She Declared Herself ‘Near-Unoffendable’
The incident occurred following a montage for Poor Things, showcased among the 10 films nominated for Best Picture during the awards ceremony on March 10.
“Those were all the parts of Poor Things that we’re allowed to show on TV,” Kimmel quipped. He seemed to be poking fun at the intense sexual content of the film.
Footage from the ceremony reveals that Emma Stone whispered something to her husband, Dave McCary, right after Jimmy Kimmel’s jab. On social media, the speculation for what Stone said ranged from “What a p—k”, to “he’s right”.
During the conversation with THR about the memorable Oscars incident, Stone also insisted that she sees herself as “near-unoffendable.”
The star clinched her second Oscar for Best Actress for her role as Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things. Her first win came from her performance in 2016’s La La Land.
In a state of disbelief, she hurried onto the stage to receive the Oscar, inadvertently tearing the zipper on her Louis Vuitton gown. “My dress is broken,” Stone pointed out in her acceptance speech. “I think it happened during [Ryan Gosling’s] ‘I’m Just Ken’ [performance].”
Of course, Stone and Gosling are frequent collaborators. They first starred opposite each other in 2011’s Crazy Stupid Love. They re-teamed for 2013’s crime epic Gangster Squad. Most recently, they appeared together in the critical darling La La Land in 2016.
Poor Things garnered 11 nominations and secured four Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards. Besides Stone’s Best Actress win in March, Poor Things also clinched Oscars for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Costume Design, and Production Design.
Lanthimos and Stone, who first collaborated on the 2018 film The Favourite, are reuniting for their latest project, Kinds of Kindness, set to release on June 21.
