During a recent interview with Extra, the former talk show host shared his thoughts about the constant attacks on Hollywood stars who use the FDA-approved type 2 diabetes medication for their weight loss journey.
“If someone is using a tool to help them get back to health, help them lose weight, which takes the pressure off their heart, this isn’t something they should be criticized about,” Dr. Phil stated. “I say more power to ‘em and don’t feel guilty about it and don’t be shamed from people saying something about it.”
The TV personality also pointed out that critics just need to “mind their own damn business.”
Dr. Phil’s Good Friend Oprah Winfrey Recently Stated She Was the ‘Steadfast Participant’ of America’s ‘Diet Culture’
Dr. Phil’s remarks come after his friend Oprah Winfrey spoke out about being a “steadfast participant” of America’s “diet culture.”
During the Weight Watcher YouTube live special last month, Winfrey spoke about her influence.
“Through my platforms, through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years and online,” she pointed out. “I’ve been a major contributor to it. I cannot tell you how many weight-loss shows and makeovers I have done and they have been a staple since I’ve been working in television.”
Winfrey also admitted that she has some regrets about how she approached weight loss. “It sent a message that starving yourself with a liquid diet set a standard for people watching that I nor anybody else could uphold.”
“The very next day I began to gain the weight back… That wagon of fat moment was set into motion after years and years,” she said. “Of thinking that my struggle with my weight was my fault and it has taken me even up until last week to process the shame I felt privately as my very public yo-yo diet moments became a national joke.”
Winfrey recalled a discussion she had with Joan Rivers about how she lost the weight in the first place. The conversation was during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
“I didn’t know what to say,” Winfrey admitted. She also noted it was her first-ever experience with national television. Rivers had in for Carson as host that night. “I just said, ‘I ate a lot… ‘ And she said, ‘No, no, no, no, no — I don’t want to hear it. You’re a pretty girl, and you must lose the weight.’”
Winfrey then said that the experience started her weight loss struggles. “That was the start of a vicious cycle of yo-yoing that ended up with that liquid diet,” she added. “Where I literally starved myself for months. And the result was that now-famous wagon a fat moment.”
