Eilish spoke out against multiple vinyl versions during a recent interview with Billboard. “We live in this day and age where, for some reason, it’s very important to some artists to make all sorts of different vinyl and packaging,” the singer stated. “Which ups the sales and ups the numbers and gets them more money and gets them more…”
Billie Eilish then pointed out how wasteful it is to release the different vinyl versions. “It is right in front of our faces and people are just getting away with it left and right.”
The Bad Guy hitmaker said it was frustrating as someone who goes out of her way to be sustainable. “[I] do the best that I can and try to involve everybody in my team in being sustainable,” she pointed out.
“And then it’s some of the biggest artists in the world making f—ing 40 different vinyl packages that have a different unique thing just to get you to keep buying more.”
Billie Eilish dubbed the marketing strategy as so wasteful. “It’s so irritating to me that we’re still at a point where you care that much about your numbers,” she added. “And you care that much about making money – and it’s all your favorite artists doing that s—.”
Although understandable, it didn’t take long for Swifties to go after Eilish on social media. The fans heavily criticized her and accused her of going after Taylor Swift, who is releasing multiple vinyls of her upcoming album, The Tortured Poets Department.
Billie Eilish Sets the Record Straight About Who She Was Referring to in Billboard Interview
Following a few days of intense backlash from the Swifties, Billie Eilish set the record straight about who she was referring to in the Billboard interview.
In one of her Instagram Stories over the weekend, Eilish cleared the air. “Okay so it would be so awesome if people would stop putting words into my mouth,” she wrote. “And actually read what I said in the billboard article.”
Billie Eilish continued by stating she wasn’t singling anyone out. “These are industry-wide systemic issues,” she noted.
She further admitted to being guilty of releasing different variations in order to get fans to buy the same album. “When it comes to variants, so many artists release them, including me,” she said. “Which I clearly state in the article. The climate crisis is now and it’s about all of us being part of the problem and trying to do better sheesh.”
Elish has been heavily involved in climate change work. She helped launch and fund Reverb’s Music Decarbonization Project. This aims to eliminate carbon emissions that are created by the music industry.
Her recent album Happier Than Ever, had eight different colored vinyl versions. She did use recycled black vinyl and recycled scraps for the colored variants.
