During the latest episode of their Amy & T.J. podcast, the duo opened up about the scandal, which caused them to depart from GMA3.
As she spoke about the situation, Amy Robach revealed that she and T.J. Holmes returned to work just two days after the initial news broke about their “private relationship.”
She also clarified the photos taken of them “did not catch” them cheating on their former spouses. “But when we came back for those two days, we were surrounded with support. My dressing room was full of all of our colleagues.”
T.J. interjected by declaring, “Some of it fake, some of it fake, absolutely. Some of it was BS.”
Amy Robach continued by noting that once it was clear she and T.J. Holmes were not returning to the show, she didn’t hear from most of their colleagues again.
Holmes went on to admit that he understands where some of their former GMA colleagues were coming from. “And we get that to a certain degree, right? Everybody’s trying to hold on to their job. They don’t want to be seen as being on ally of the two people that ABC News doesn’t like.”
Robach and Holmes were removed from GMA3 in Dec. 22 after their relationship went public. They were officially fired from ABC News a month later.
Nearly a year later, they launched their podcast on iHeartRadio.
Robach was previously married to Andrew Shue. They separated in a few months before her relationship with Holmes went public. Holmes was married to Marilee Fiebig and they separated around the same time as Robach and Shue.
T.J. Holmes Said He and Amy Robach ‘Stayed Away’ From Some of Their Former ‘GMA’ Colleagues Because They Were ‘Worried’ About Them
Meanwhile, T.J. Holmes stated that he and Amy Robach took the safety of their former GMA colleagues into consideration and were “worried” about how the relationship would impact those on the show.
“You wouldn’t believe the effort we put into it with [Michael] Strahan,” Holmes explained. He then said that he and Robach would speak to Strahan about what time to arrive in comparison to when they would arrive. They were trying to “protect Strahan from [them].”
“That is the shame I’m talking about,” Holmes continued. “This is a guy we’ve been very close to for 10 years now, and even we didn’t want to get whatever our ‘stank’ is on him for some reason. And we’ve struggled to get out of that mindset. But friends like that do help, and time helps.”
Amy Robach recalled that the backlash she and Holmes received felt like she “murdered someone.”
“No one came up and said anything horrible to our faces,” she added. “But it was just all the comments and all the commentary and all the headlines, it just, it weighs you down to the point where you think ‘I’m the worst person in the world.’ And you do feel like you’ve committed a crime.”
