Violence has Plagued the NYC Subway This Month
Of course, this is the latest of a string of grim and violent incidents plaguing the NYC subway system in the New Year.
Earlier this month, a morning altercation on NYC’s Grand Central subway platform turned violent, with two men stabbing each other.
Rafael Santiago, 30, and Jason Chatham, 50, got into a fight on the northbound 4, 5, and 6 train platform at 42nd Street-Grand Central just before 1 a.m. Both men sustained slashes and stab wounds to their arms. Emergency responders treated Chatham at the scene. Meanwhile, Santiago was taken to Bellevue Hospital and reported to be conscious and alert, police said.
Both men were arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault, while authorities also recovered a knife at the scene.
Meanwhile, another stabbing at the same subway location just days earlier.
Malik Little, 46, a Metro-North passenger, was charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a man who confronted him over loud music, MTA Police said. The incident happened at Grand Central Terminal.
Little was playing music on his phone’s speaker when a 31-year-old passenger complained about the noise. The disagreement quickly escalated, and Little stabbed the man twice in the chest as the train pulled into Grand Central.
The victim disembarked from the train and promptly pointed out his attacker to police waiting on the platform. Officers apprehended Little at the scene without incident and recovered a knife, according to the MTAPD. The 31-year-old victim was transported to Bellevue Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Another knife attack occurred on Christmas Eve at the subway. Jason Sargeant was accused of assaulting a man and woman at Grand Central. He allegedly slashed the man’s wrist and the woman’s neck, according to the NYPD.
