More than a dozen people are currently recovering following a tram accident at Universal Studios Hollywood over the weekend.
The tram crash occurred during one of the park’s studio tours. The Los Angeles County Fire Department reportedly responded to the park just after 9 p.m.
Authorities told media outlets that most of the injuries were minor. However, one parkgoer’s injuries were deemed critical.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department shared the incident happened in the back lot of Universal Studio Hollywood.
“The tram had just passed the Jurassic Park Cars and was making a turn to head northbound on Avenue M. Due to unknown reasons,” the statement reads.
“While negotiating the turn onto Avenue M, the last car of the tram collided with a metal guardrail on the right side of the roadway causing it to tilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram.”
The Los Angeles County Sherriff Department confirmed that 15 passengers were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment and evaluations with minor to moderate injuries.
“The cause of the crash is under investigation,” the statement added. “Alcohol and drugs are not considered to be a factor in the crash.”
Universal Studios did confirm that the tram incident took place and there were multiple minor injuries. “We are working to support our guests and understand the circumstances that led to the accident.”
California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident.
A Witness Revels More Details About the Universal Studios Tram Crash
One of the parkgoers on one of Universal Studios’ last trams of the night revealed more details about the tram accident to the Los Angeles Times. She and her family had boarded their tram at 8:30 p.m.
Although she wasn’t on the tram that crashed, she said she and her family’s tram was not too far from the scene. She recalled that as her tram was passing the King Kong and T. rex attraction, it suddenly stopped.
“We’re like, ‘Ok, maybe they are having difficulties,” the parkgoer, Rebecca Miller, said. “And then as it went on, it was like, this is a little odd.”
Miller and her family then noticed changes in the park employees’ behaviors. “Then their radios started getting messages and we noticed a whole change in their demeanor.”
They were stuck on the tram until around 10:15 p.m. Miller and her family had been at Universal Studios for a Girl Scout event. They remained at the park following the tram incident.
