The Topsham Fairgrounds hosted a monster truck event on Saturday, during which a vehicle named Crushstation launched off a ramp, went airborne, and struck a power line.
The video captured people scrambling as the snagged line set off a chain reaction, causing several utility poles and a transformer to fall near the grandstands, leaving live wires scattered on the ground.
The force brought the utility poles crashing down as they ran from the falling trees, power lines, and transformers. In the footage, one man was seen falling after being struck by a pole that had snapped in half.
The falling live wires narrowly missed entangling a young boy carried by an adult, who miraculously managed to evade the danger while keeping the child safe.
Several individuals were seen pulling away a man in a wheelchair and a small child who were just a few feet away from the falling wires.
Much of the City’s Power Shut Down Following the Monster Truck Knocking Down Powerlines
Topsham Police reported that several individuals sustained minor injuries in the incident. Two of the injured were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The Maine-based monster truck, designed to resemble a lobster, was cleverly named Crushstation—a playful twist on the word crustacean. The driver of the monster truck was unharmed.
Mike Hersom, who was watching with his 3-year-old son, narrowly escaped being hit by the falling transformer. “I’m still a little bit shaken up,” he told the AP.
He watched in disbelief for a moment before springing into action to move away. It wasn’t until he later viewed the video that he realized just how close the transformer had come to him and his son.“When I watched the video, it was like, ‘Holy smokes. That’s crazy,’” he explained.
Following the incident, power was promptly shut down across much of Topsham at the request of the Topsham Fire Department to ensure the safe treatment and evacuation of individuals from the scene. Power was restored around 4:30 PM.
The police stated that the investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
