According to a spokesperson who talked to Entertainment Tonight, “On April 20, an accident occurred on the set of The Pickup during a rehearsed 2nd unit action sequence. Unfortunately, the sequence did not go as planned and several members of the crew were injured as a result.”
While the accident was apparently a “freak” one, it certainly was bad enough to cause injuries.
“We are still in the process of gathering facts on what happened and why, but first and foremost our thoughts are with those who are recovering…[The] well-being of the entire crew and cast is our first priority, and we will continue to insist on the highest industry standards of safety while filming. All safety precautions were reviewed prior to and monitored during the shoot.”
Crew Members Hospitalized After Accident on Set of Eddie Murphy Film
Apparently, a source close to production revealed that a truck locked up and hit a car. “It was a completely freak accident,” they told the Associated Press. “[It] wasn’t even a complicated or dangerous stunt.”
Murphy, Keke Palmer, and Pete Davidson (all of whom star in the film) were not on set during the incident. Several crew members were impacted and are now injured as a result. In fact, some even broke their bones and were taken to the hospital, with one still hospitalized as of Tuesday.
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) — the crew union — made the following statement regarding the incident: “IATSE is aware of an accident that took place on the Georgia set of The Pickup and have started an inquiry.”
Directed by Tim Story, The Pickup began filming in Atlanta toward the end of February. Production is not expecting any delays following the accident.
According to the Associated Press, “The studio did not give details on the injuries or the roles of the crew members who were hurt.”
