It’s a sad day for the University of Connecticut basketball fans. Former UConn men’s basketball player Rakim Lubin has died. The alum was just 28 years old too.

Lubin played for the team during the 2014-15 season. Growing up in Gadsen, Alabama, he earned the nickname “Rock” thanks to both his size and intimidating figure. He used that to his advantage while on the court. It let him go far. He became a three-star recruit after graduating from Buford High School in Georgia. Lubin also earned all-region honors and first-team all-state. He earned Georgia Sportswriters 3A layer of the Year. Ultimately, Lubind decided to go to UConn over Auburn and Georgia Tech.
During his freshman year, he ended up playing 24 games. However, he only averaged 1 point and 1.2 rebounds per game. Afterwards, he ended up transferring to Cal-State Northridge and then LSU-Shreveport.
What he did after college is unknown. Lubin passed away on Sunday. According to a memorial page, his family set up his arrangements at the Prestige Memorial Funeral Home in Gadsden. They didn’t reveal a cause of death.

According to the obituary: “Prestige Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory, sadly announces the passing of Mr.Rakim D. Lubin, age 28, of Gadsden, AL. who transitioned on Sunday, May 12, 2024. He is survived by his loving family. We ask that you please keep this family and those that may be going through the same lifted in prayer. Professional service entrusted to: Prestige Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory.”
The family also included this quote, “When peace like a river attended my way When sorrows like sea billows roll Whatever my lot, thou has taught me to say It is well, it is well, with my soul.”
Lubin is only the latest student-athlete to pass in May. Obi Ezeh, former Michigan football player also passed away earlier this month. He was 36-year-old. His mother announced his death via social media.
She wrote, “My very own!— My Obi — My #2 — My heart —My father’s heart. My quiet giant! Grand child of an elephant. Journey well to your maker oo. Mother Mary please hold his hands for me. St. Peter open the gate for him as the celestial choirs marshal him in to Jesus. My Obinna Ezeh, you will always be in my heart my beloved son.”
