A little over a week after O. J. Simpson died following a battle with prostate cancer, one of the late disgraced athlete’s credit cards has been put up for auction.
According to TMZ, Jonathan Lepore is selling the business account card through Goldin Auctions. He shared with the media outlet that he had purchased the Jan. 2023 expired credit card on eBay last summer for $70. It was later added to his sports memorabilia collection.
Lepore explained he had planned to gift the piece of plastic to his friend’s father, who used to hang out with O.J. Simpson and his wife Nicole Brown in the Hamptons in the ‘80s and early ‘90s.
However, Lepore said he hasn’t been able to contact his friend’s father since purchasing the card. He has since decided to sell the card through auction. The media outlet stated the card displays mild peripheral wear. It also has small spots of discoloration.
Simpson notably did not sign the back of the credit card as well.
Speaking to TMZ, Goldin founder and CEO, Ken Goldin spoke about Simpson being charged, and later acquitted, for the murders of Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman. He noted the infamous murders and trial could draw more attention to the credit card.
“With O.J.’s recent passing, this card is a small piece of that story,” Goldin explained. “And we could see some exciting numbers at auction.”
Lepore said he wasn’t planning to keep all the money that the Simpson’s credit card could attract. He will be donating 10% of the final sale to the National Network to End Domestic Violence.
The auction will end on Thursday.
O.J. Simpson Didn’t Die Surrounded By His Loved Ones As Original Claimed
According to O.J. Simpson’s estate executor, Malcolm Lavergne, the late controversial athlete wasn’t surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his death like originally claimed.
While speaking to AP News, Lavergne revealed Simpson was one visitor away from dying alone. However, he didn’t reveal who was at the former NFL star’s side as he succumbed to prostate cancer. He did point out that it was a “close family member.”
O.J. Simpson had five children. His daughter, Aaren Simpson, tragically passed away by accidental drowning right before she turned two in 1979. The four other children, ages 35 to 55, are currently alive.
His older children, including Aaren, were with his first wife, Marguerite Whitley. His younger two children, Sydney and Justin, were from his marriage to Nicole Brown.
O.J. Simpson had a decent reputation, due to his NFL career, up until 1994. He became a key suspect in the murders of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman, which took place on June 12, 1994. Although he was acquitted of the murders during the 1995 “Trial of the Century,” Simpson’s reputation never fully recovered.
