“That’s why I am living. That’s why I am OK because I didn’t get married … no marriage, no children. I’d rather be single,” Signore told The Post. “When you are married you have a lot of trouble.”
She also mentioned that she doesn’t smoke or drink, which might contribute to her lasting health.
Signore explained that she worked for the MTA for 39 years, including as an administrative assistant. To celebrate her 112th birthday, she enjoyed homemade pasta from her nephew, along with cake and time with friends.
New York’s Oldest Person Turns 112
Born in 1912, Signore was the oldest of five and the daughter of Italian immigrants. However, all of her siblings have already passed.
“I’m the oldest, and I am the only one left,” she said.
Signmore was originally from Harlem but moved to the Bronx at age 12. She since has lived through countless eras and historic events, from the Great Depression all the way through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Back when she was growing up, she noted, life was much safer. “Things were OK. It was during the Second World War. My brothers were in the war. They all came home,” she said. “It was safer then. Not today … today it’s not safe.”
When it comes to offering advice for a long, fulfilling life, Signore recommends staying unmarried — a rule she followed herself. “Don’t marry,” she said. “No marriage and no children.”
She then mentioned she was able to travel all over, to places like Italy, France, and Switzerland. “I’m a happy person,” she said.
