Morning talk show host Kelly Ripa is getting real about the “good-bad habit” that led to her mouth surgery.

During a recent episode of her Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, Ripa chatted with Survival of the Thickest creator, Michelle Buteau, about the dental procedure. She noted that the surgery will be painful and she will not be allowed to talk for ten days afterward.
Ripa noted that she is having a gum graft procedure. The surgery is used to treat receding or thinning gums. Ripa pointed out that during the procedure, the dental crew will remove the skin from the roof of her mouth and graft it onto the gums.
The talk show host further revealed that she needed to the procedure after brushing too much.
“I’m an over-brusher,” she declared. “I brush my teeth too much. It’s a good-bad habit. But I’ve caused gum recession down here, specifically, and so they have gotta re-gum my gums.”
Although Buteau praised her for being progressive when it comes to oral care, Ripa admitted she previously procrastinated on getting the procedure done.
“Before you praise me, I was supposed to do it five years ago,” she said. “But now, just so you know, the doctor was like, ‘Now, you don’t have the luxury of time.’”
Later in her interview with Buteau, Ripa shared her worries regarding the no-talking rule.
“We’re already managing my stress level for not being able to talk for ten days,” she said.
Ripa’s Husband Vows to Help Her Follow the Rules After Her Mouth Procedure
Meanwhile, Ripa’s co-host and husband, Mark Consuelos, spoke out about the procedure, stating he was “trying to keep [his wife] to follow the rules, follow the directions.”
“Yeah, it’s painful,” he said about the procedure last month. “But she famously doesn’t feel pain. When she goes into the dentist, she doesn’t use the novocaine. But this one hurts, so I know it’s bad.”
Since the procedure, Ripa has been taking time off to fully recover. She is expected to return to Live With Kelly and Mark on September 8.
