According to The New York Post, the employee was standing outside Golden Hours Liquor Store on International Boulevard in Oakland when he was confronted by more than two dozen cyclists, who circled and started attacking him.
At one point, the employee attempted to get in the face of one of the cyclists, who was seen pushing his fist against his other hand. Eventually, the cyclist slapped the liquor store employee across the face and then knocked his hat off.
Another cyclist then got behind the liquor store employee and punched him in the side of the neck and on the head. This led to other cyclists stepping up to take a swing and chaos erupted.
“Get him, get him,” multiple people chanted.
However, things immediately took a turn when the liquor store employee pulled a handgun, this led to those attacking him to immediately sprint away. He then pointed the gun at one of his attackers and said, “Where you at, where you at?”
An Instagram user witnessed and recorded the ordeal. “They better stop playing with Billy while he at work,” the Instagram user wrote in the caption. “Everybody ain’t going out.”
In a separate video, the liquor store employee is seen chasing down one of the cyclists. He eventually takes a swipe at the cyclist, knocking them to the ground.
Oakland Police Department Investigated ‘ShotSpotter Activation’ Following International Boulevard Incident
The Oakland Police Department confirmed to The New York Post that officers responded at around 4:15 to investigate a “ShotSpotter activation.”
“ShotSpotter” is a gunshot detection system that alerts first responders when it picks up nearby gunfire.
Although the police “located evidence of a shooting,” there were no reports of any injuries. No arrests were also made in connection to the incident.
The liquor store employee eventually put his gun away. He then remained outside the store. Several people attempted to confront him.
The employee later spoke to NBC Bay Area about what happened. He said he initially pulled the gun after one of the attackers went for his belt. “I mean he yanked on my belt pretty hard and the firearm started to go down my pants,” the employee, named Robert, explained. “So, I pulled it out and backed him up, backed them all up.”
Robert also told the media outlet that he didn’t plan to hurt anyone. He said as the cyclist started to leave the area, he was punched again. That was when he heard gunfire. “At the last minute and just bow, hit me right in the face,” he added. “And then I heard someone shooting up in the air and they took off then,” Robert said.
