According to David, Lewis and him had been together from the very beginning. They were born only days apart at the same hospital. David is feeling a mixture of emotions after learning of his passing.
“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me,” David wrote in a statement via Variety. “He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”
Despite the coincidence of their births, Lewis and David wouldn’t meet for the first time until they were 12 at sports camp. According to Today, Lewis and David did not like each other.
“I disliked him intensely. He was cocky, he was arrogant,’” Lewis said. “When we played baseball I tried to hit him with the ball: we were arch-rivals. I couldn’t wait for the camp to be over just to get away from Larry. I’m sure he felt the same way.”
However, they would end up being friends as adults. The two met again after both decided to become comedians. David ended up giving Lewis one of his most iconic performances — himself. Lewis starred on the show Curb Your Enthusiasm as a fictionalized version of himself.
Larry David and Others Remember Richard Lewis
David isn’t the only one who is mourning the comedian. Jamie Lee Curtis also memorialized her Anything but Love co-star. She shared a tribute to the comedian on Instagram.
“Richard’s last text to me, was hoping that I could convince ABC/Disney to put out another boxed set of episodes of the show,” Curtis wrote. “He also is the reason I am sober. He helped me. I am forever grateful for him for that act of grace alone. He found love with Joyce and that, of course, besides his sobriety, is what mattered most to him. I’m weeping as I write this. Strange way of saying thank you to a sweet and funny man. Rest in laughter, Richard. My Marty, I love you, Hannah!”
Likewise, HBO also wrote a memorial for the actor. “We are heartbroken to learn that Richard Lewis has passed away. His comedic brilliance, wit and talent were unmatched,” the company wrote. “Richard will always be a cherished member of the HBO and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ families, our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and all the fans who could count on Richard to brighten their days with laughter.”
