During Monday’s American Idol episode, Katy Perry experienced an embarrassing mishap when her top broke while evaluating a contestant.
The wardrobe mishap occurred moments before Top 14 contender Roman Collins took the stage to perform James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” when Perry’s silver sculptural crop top seemed to unexpectedly come undone at the back.
The TV personality was inexplicably shocked that wearing 50 pounds of scrap metal as her top didn’t go well. In a behind-the-scenes video shared by Perry on Instagram, the singer was helped by crew members fixing her top as she sat at the judging panel. “My top broke #idol,” wordsmith Katy Perry captioned the footage.
“I need my top to stay on,” Perry says before giving an animated look of concern to the camera. “If it’s not fixed, this show is going to get more than it wanted,” she quipped.
Luke Bryan, a fellow judge on American Idol, assisted Katy Perry by using a pair of tiny scissors to fix an issue with the back of her top, exclaiming, “I’m going in!” as he did so. However, after assessing the situation, he demurred. “Never mind,” he sheepishly uttered.
Later, in a clip from Monday night’s American Idol episode, Perry was observed immediately after experiencing a wardrobe malfunction. She protectively wrapped her arms around her chest as she stood at the judging panel.
“Ratings! Here we come ratings!” Bryan quipped beside her.
Perry, kneeling behind the table for cover, joked, “It’s a family show!” A final shot showed her in her seat, using a pillow to cover herself.

However, many fans weren’t terribly surprised that wearing a 1959 Cadillac tailfin would result in calamity. Upon seeing the footage of Katy Perry‘s not at all staged top-breaking moment, many fans roasted the pop star.
“Maybe try wearing proper clothes rather than dressing as the Tin Man!?”, a fan suggested. “That’s not a top, it’s a car bumper,” another onlooker joked in the comments. “Maybe don’t wear a f—king ship anchor to a TV show,” a third Instagram user bluntly urged.
Meanwhile, in a previous tease of the outfit, Katy Perry implied the top that broke represented a shark (or an idol…) rather than a random car part. “[If] you see a shark you’re left brained, if you see #idol tonight you’re my bestie,” she wrote alongside an Instagram post of her striking a pose in the unique threads.
Even hubby Orlando Bloom couldn’t help but get in on the fun concerning the eccentric wardrobe. “Glad I could bend that frying pan with my bare hands for you baby,” he quipped in the comments.
