“Hi everybody, I just wanted to check in with you all,” he wrote alongside snapshots of him playing guitar on stage. “Towards the end of the last Stray Cats tour I noticed that my hands were cramping up,” he added about his band’s summer tour last year.
“I’ve since discovered that I have an autoimmune disease. I cannot play guitar,” he added
Setzer likened the sensation to “playing while wearing gloves,” though he clarified that it is not accompanied by any pain.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly targets healthy cells, causing damage throughout the body. For Setzer, the symptoms are most pronounced in his hands, which have borne the greatest impact. Fortunately, there appears to be a glimmer of hope on the horizon.
“I have seen some progress in that I can hold a pen and tie my shoes. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I was at a point where I couldn’t even do that,” he revealed. “Luckily, I have the best hospital in the world down the block from me. It’s called the Mayo Clinic.”
He concluded with a hopeful note: “I know I will beat this, it will just take some time. I love you all, Brian.”
