Love sat down with The Standard to promote her new eight-part series, Courtney Love’s Women, on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Sounds. Through the series, Love plans to reflect on the women in her industry who have shaped her own path.
When asked about certain women, such as Taylor Swift, she didn’t necessarily have nice things to say. “People used to say that I was so difficult,” Love said. “They said I was disagreeable. Yes, I am completely disagreeable and I’m never going to apologize for that.”
She then mentioned that she actually “wanted to be known as a b-tch,” while her late husband Kurt Cobain “wanted to be liked.
“Being liked was never my thing,” she added. “[Kurt] was able to hide behind me, but then I got hated. Then Kurt died, and the hatred towards me reached a completely new level. I did not plan for that.”
Love added that she felt inspired by Bob Dylan’s indifference toward his likeness in Don’t Look Back.
“I had a b***h capacity and I was cool with not being liked,” she said.
Courtney Love Slams Taylor Swift in Recent Interview
During her interview with The Standard, Love shared that many of the “successful women in the music industry … are becoming a cliché.”
“Now, every successful woman is cloned, so there is just too much music,” she said. “They’re all the same. If you play something on Spotify, you get bombarded with a lot of stuff that’s exactly the same.”
She then went on to slam Taylor Swift — among other female musicians.
“[Taylor] might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist,” Love said.
This seemingly contradicted the lovely birthday message Love shared for Taylor on her Facebook just a few years back.
“@taylorswift, aspirational huge role model for many young women & occasional hair twin / neighbour,” she wrote in December 2021, adding a photo of the two singers together.
She went on to bash several other women. Love mentioned that Lana Del Rey “should really take seven years off.” Additionally, she said Madonna doesn’t like her “and she doesn’t like me.”
Love also came for Beyoncé by saying “I just don’t like her music.”
“I mean, I like the idea of Beyoncé doing a country record because it’s about Black women going into spaces where previously only white women have been allowed, not that I like it much,” she stated.
Despite her new series’s intention of lifting other women in the industry, Love seems to be doing the opposite. According to many angry fans:
“Courtney Love publicly puts down fellow female artists like it’s a national sport,” one person said.
“Ok well IK of Taylor because of her music and IK of Courtney Love because of her relationship with Kurt Cobain sooo, how about we stop putting women down Courtney,” another said.
