Charlie Colin of Train Dead at 58
Colin was one of the founding members of Train, along with bandmates Pat Monahan, Rob Hotchkiss, Jimmy Stafford and Scott Underwood. They formed the band in the mid ’90s and are best known for their hits “Drops of Jupiter” and “Hey, Soul Sister.” Colin left the band back in 2003, allegedly due to substance abuse.
“There was a lot of things that led to me leaving, but it really escalated into it,” Colin told Delphine’s Circle in a 2023 interview. “We never took a break. We drove our tour bus into the parking lot of the recording studio for our second and third record. In Philadelphia, we made our one-and-a-half record… We just never stopped. It’s kind of one those things where you feel like this is too good to be true. Most bands have a lifespan of a few years.”
While his former band members haven’t yet released a statement, many others have shared their condolences online.
“Devastated to have just learned my long time friend & fellow musician, former roomate and founding member of Train, Charlie Colin, has passed away,” Gregory J. Chamberlain said on X. “RIP ol’ buddy. See you on the other side!”
“That’s so sad. Train was such a big part of my teenage years. RIP Charlie Colin,” a fan added on X.
