After being with Ryan Reynolds for more than a decade, Blake Lively reveals the one rule she and the Deadpool star follow.
During a recent appearance on Amber Tamblyn’s Substack show Further Ado, Lively spoke about making sure to prioritize their relationship over any project they’re working on.
“When Ryan and I got together, we made a rule not to work at the same time,” Lively explained. “So that we could always prioritize our personal life. That takes working really hard when we’re not. Just like financial planning and sustaining that – it takes balance.”
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds started dating in 2011 not long after Reynolds split from his first wife, Scarlett Johansson. The duo met on the set of The Green Lantern. They got married in 2012 and have four children together.
Lively stated before she and Reynolds got together she was used to “working hard and going and going and going and going and going.”
“Especially, Gossip Girl was six years of my life,” Lively continued. “And we were sometimes shooting three episodes at once.”
Blake Lively previously praised Ryan Reynolds while presenting him with the 36th American Cinematheque Award. “Now, I am his home, and our girls are his home. And just like that 19-year-old boy, he races home. Whether it’s across the globe or a meeting across the street, he is hard-wired to get home.”
Lively also pointed out that if he came home from a set not in his wardrobe, she and the kids would be very concerned. “Soaked in mud, fake blood, real blood, prosthetic scars, superhero suits, tap shoes, or clown makeup, daddy always comes home.”

In October 2023, Ryan Reynolds opened up to PEOPLE about how he and his wife Blake Lively stress the importance of self-awareness to their four children.
“I think it’s more about talking to them about everything,” Reynolds said at the time. “It’s genuine when I say I take a huge interest in their days and how things are going.”
Ryan Reynolds then said that the best time of his day is walking his and Blake Lively’s children to school and walking them back. “I think as parents, we are so much better equipped to handle the rigors of childhood through our kids now than when I was a kid. It’s just totally different now. People are much more self-aware. And that’s the thing we sort of hang our hat on the most is self-awareness with our kids. Not be happy, not be anything, just be self-aware and welcome everything in.”
