Aubrey O’Day is opening up about her own personal experience with now-infamous rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs.
The former Danity Kane member told TMZ that Diddy allegedly attempted to buy her and other ex-Bad Boy artists’ silence by giving them back their publishing rights. She had signed with Bad Boy Records in the 2000s.
During the media outlet’s new documentary The Downfall of Diddy, Audrey O’Day stated that while the Diddy offer seemed generous at the time, it also came with a lot of strings attached. She claimed for her and other artists to get their music rights, they each had to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs).
O’Day said she didn’t want to do that because she had a sense that she would be signing away her ability to speak out if she would have to. She also pointed out that she was given $300.30 for a “full release against all claims against Diddy and many other players.”
When asked what was Diddy’s motive for releasing the publishing rights, Aubrey O’Day had some ideas. “I think you would probably be making moves to keep as many people quiet as possible.”
O’Day further pointed out what the contract stated. “It asked me specifically to stay silent and never speak poorly about a human,” she recounted. “So then I realized something really bad is coming.”
A source involved in the situation also shared details with Page Six. “Aubrey O’Day got her big break because Diddy and Bad Boy cast her in their show with her group, Danity Kane.”
“Last year, when he reassigned his portion of the publishing to Bad Boy artists, an unprecedented move within the industry and which he did not have to do, not all artists signed an NDA.”
Diddy is currently under investigation for human trafficking and sexual assault allegations.
Aubrey O’Day Spoke Out About Behavior She Noticed From Diddy During ‘Making the Band’
In 2019, Aubrey O’Day opened up about her experience with Diddy while on MTV’s Making the Band in the early 2000s.
While speaking to Variety, O’Day stated she saw behavior from the famed rapper that she believes he wouldn’t get away with now.
“Diddy’s a father, so hopefully he’s learning things about the way that you handle women,” Aubrey O’Day said at the time. “And has more compassion for women now.”
O’Day and Diddy notably had a “rocky relationship” during the hit series. Diddy had ejected her and bandmate Wanita D. Woods from Danity Kane in 2008. The three other bandmates, Dawn Richard, Aundrea Fimbres, and Shannon Bex, continued on until the group’s disbanding.
“Puff is a very difficult person to work with,” Aubrey O’Day stated. “Everything had to be perfect. I remember times when he looked at my toenails and was like, ‘What is your third toenail doing? Go get that s— fixed before you walk into a room.’”
“Or we would be in rehearsals performing an hour-and-a-half set over and over and he would walk in for five minutes with a camera and said, ‘Aubrey, why are you sweating? You look like a wet dog. You’re the hot one, so do you think anyone wants to see that?’”
O’Day went on to add that she and her bandmates were “scared to death” with what would happen with Diddy each day.
