Three are dead and three are hospitalized after a car launched into the air and traveled a hundred feet into a building over the weekend.
According to CBS News, the horrific accident occurred in Pasadena, Calif. at around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. A Tesla Model 3 carrying six people ran through a red light on Foothill Boulevard and slammed into a nearby curve. The impact caused the vehicle to fly into a power pole and eventually a building.
The driver and two of the passengers were killed. The three other passengers were ejected from the back of the car. Police reported that the 22-year-old driver had been going at least double the 35 mph speed limit. The six people involved were between the ages of 17 and 22.
The building that the vehicle crashed into wasn’t occupied at the time. Pasadena Police Department Lieutenant Anthony Russo spoke out about the accident.
“The speed was so significant that the vehicle was able to launch into the air and travel through the air … maybe a hundred feet. It’s extremely devastating, and you think about tomorrow being Mother’s Day.”
The three passengers ejected from the car were hospitalized in stable condition. They were reportedly not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Investigators also reportedly found some evidence at the scene that alcohol may have played a role in the accident. However, it has yet to be confirmed if the driver of the vehicle was impaired.
The car accident reportedly caused a power outage to more than 500 nearby homes and businesses.
