The incident occurred on Wednesday morning and involved a Delta plane coming in from Vancouver and a Japan Airlines plane. A spokesperson from Delta spoke with TMZ about the collision, explaining that the plane was in the middle of de-icing when it made contact with the Japan Airlines wing tip.
According to the rep, there are no reports of injuries to crew members or passengers. Delta has also apologized to travelers “for the experience and delay in travels”.
Passengers were then re-accommodated to a new aircraft following the incident. The cause of the incident is currently being investigated.
Although the investigation is still underway, TMZ has released a statement from The Federal Aviation Administration. The administration claims that the “right wing of Japan Airlines Flight 68 struck the tail of the Delta plane at about 10:40 AM PT.” They also stated that the “aircraft were in an area that is not under air traffic control.”
The rep also told TMZ that the incident has had a “minimal impact to airport operations.”
One passenger named Jackie Patton spoke with North Shore News about her experience. She said, “I saw the aircraft coming up behind us from my window seat, looked like it was very close. A few seconds later, there was a very loud noise and the plane shook. It was obvious right away something was wrong.”
Patton continued, “I didn’t see the actual hit itself but the shaking and loud noise that came out of nowhere was scary.”
“With all of the plane incidents lately, I was a bit nervous to fly anyway and then this happens. Everyone had a shocked reaction. No one knew what had happened,” Patton added.
