Timothée Chalamet Chose His Own Costumes For ‘Little Women’

Timothee Chalamet is one of Hollywood’s hottest new actors, and it’s easy to see why. The young star has already made a name for himself at the age of 24. His performances in Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird, and Beautiful Boy have solidified Chalamet’s talent as an actor. In addition to being a well-versed entertainer, the actor is also a fashion icon of sorts. His style is a very hot topic for his fans and critics. His most recent role in Little Women earned Chalamet even more acclaim. The movie is based on the 1868 novel of the same name and is the seventh adaptation of the book, which means it needed to be unique in several ways — including costuming. It seems that Chalamet’s fashion sense meant that he was more involved in the production than many may know.

Timothee Chalamet’s fashionable input was used on set

Little Women was written and directed by Greta Gerwig, who previously worked with Chalamet on Lady Bird. Gerwig spoke on the Variety podcast, The Big Ticket, about her determination to direct the film and why Chalamet had free-range when it came to his costumes. “The truth is Jacqueline [Durran], the costume designer, said, Timothee has such a fabulous sense of style that she basically would just let him do what he wanted,” Gerwig explained. “She did hang a bunch of different costumes in his trailer and say, ‘Whatever you want to put together.'” Durran spoke with Variety about working with the young actor and what she envisioned his wardrobe. Durran claimed that she wanted the actor to look the same as his fans view him. “I was looking for a style of suit that would be accessible to a young audience in terms of what they wanted to look at Timothee wearing,” Durran told the outlet. The designer ultimately came up with an “anachronistic” look for Chalamet. The end result was vests and shirts that were button-down and pre-dated the Civil War setting. “I went earlier on dates for his young look. I was actually closer to the 1840s. And for his Parisian look, I was closer to the 1880s. I stretched the time frame in order to find things that were the look we wanted for his character,” Durran stated.

The actor fit the costumes in more ways than one

Durran confirmed Gerwig’s statement about Timothee Chalamet having a lot of input on his character’s outfits. “He contributed so strongly to how he wore the clothes. When we were fitting for them, I’d tell him, Look at these things, this is what you got, how would you wear it? That’s how we went on and got the flavor of Timothee into the style of the clothes. It was how he chose to style the items. He has a way of wearing things,” Durran said. The designer also shared that for Chalamet’s character, Theodore “Teddy” Laurie, she looked to inspiration from three sources. She combined the outfits in the painting The Circle of the Rue Royale, the style of British Teds (or Teddy Boys), and, funnily enough, a young Bob Dylan. It’s fitting that Durran would look to Dylan for style inspiration since, a few weeks after the film’s release, it was reported that Chalamet is set to play the iconic singer in an upcoming drama.
