With a graphic warning, the music video follows Carpenter as she seeks bloody revenge against her ex’s new girlfriend, played by Ortega. Throughout the video, the two have a gory fight that features guns, voodoo dolls, and even a severed limb.
However, after making out with the male lead, the Jenna Ortega character seemingly has a change of heart. She then kills him with a chainsaw before kissing Sabrina Carpenter. The moment hits as right when Carpenter sings, “Well I heard you’re back together, and if that’s true/ You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissing you.”
The characters end up attending the boyfriend’s funeral together. They then go out for a coffee and compare notes on their “insecure” and “clingy” deceased ex.
Throughout the music video, Ortega and Carpenter paid tribute to Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn’s characters in Death Becomes Her.
The duo also appeared as characters in various bloody cinematic scenes. This includes Ortega dressing up as Daryl Hannah in Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Carpenter being impaled on a white picket fence like a scene in 2000’s Ginger Snaps.
Sabrina Carpenter Says ‘Taste’ Is Inspired By ‘Death Becomes Her’
Before the “Taste” music video dropped, Sabrina Carpenter stated it was inspired by one of her favorite films, Death Becomes Her.
During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, Sabrina spoke about Death Becomes Her was the video’s ultimate inspiration. She also said that Jenna is a big fan of the film as well.
“[The video] was inspired by one of my favorite films, and she was a huge fan of the film,” Sabrina Carpenter said about Jenna Ortega. “I’m so excited for you guys to see this video, you have no idea. I think it’s my favorite one I’ve ever done.”
Release in 1992, Death Becomes Her follows two female rivals as they fight over a man. They also do this while trying to keep their young beauty glows. Streep and Hawn starred in the cult classic alongside Bruce Willis.
The film won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
Along with speaking about the music video, Carpenter opened up about her new album, “Short ’n Sweet.”
“It does really feel like a self-titled album to me, in a weird way,” she told Fallon. “It really just feels like all of these stories and memories — just very blunt, very forward, very fun and just some of the best memories I’ve had.”
