With Bob Weir’s passing on January 10, the original Grateful Dead due are now in the ground together. And considering how their legacy and music has prospered and continued, I’m sure they’re very grateful indeed.
Co-founder of Dead and Company, John Mayer, took to Instagram to share a small but sweet message to Bob Weir on January 12.
“Okay Bob. I’ll do it your way. Fkn’ A…” he started. The post itself is a black-and-white photo of Bob Weir. “Thanks for letting me ride alongside you. It sure was a pleasure.”
“If you say it’s not the end, then I’ll believe you. I’ll meet you in the music. Come find me anytime.”
Those poetic words have struck a chord with many fans. Most find the sentiment to be beautiful and fitting.
John Mayer Has Been Performing Alongside Bob Weir For Just Over Ten Years
When Jerry Garcia died in 1995, the Grateful Dead disbanded only four months later. The band had played together for 30 years.
In 2015, however, original members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann alongside John Mayer formed Dead and Company. And this happened in a pretty peculiar way.
While the original members were preparing for their 50th Anniversary Tour Fare Thee Well, John Mayer was hosting The Late Night Show. Mayer was semi-recently inspired by the Grateful Dead, and spent time learning and practicing a vast amount of their catalogue.
Mayer invited Bob Weir to a studio session, and a bond quickly formed between the two, and the rest is history.
Dead and Company was formed, and John Mayer stood in for Jerry Garcia. After 10 years of playing together, it’s no wonder Mayer promised to “meet” Weir in the music.
The Grateful Dead instagram also made a post in tribute to Bob Weir. The page called Weir a “guitar player unlike any other, and a songwriter who created some of the most interesting, exciting, and oddly-timed songs in rock history.”
