Harrison Butker’s recent commencement speech continues to make waves, with Jason Kelce defending his wife Kylie due to fallout.
During a graduation speech at Benedictine College, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Butker told female graduates they had been misled about their lives, emphasizing wife and mother as their most important roles. He also took issue with Pride Month, abortion, and IVF.
On his New Heights podcast, Jason Kelce commented on Butker’s speech. “A lot of the things he said in his commencement speech are not things that I align myself with,” the retired Eagles center admitted.
However, he noted that given the setting of the speech, nothing about Harrison Butker’s comments should come as a surprise.
“He’s giving a commencement speech at a Catholic university,” Kelce pointed out. “And, shocker, it ended up being a very religious and Catholic speech.”
Despite this benign statement barely even qualifying as an opinion, the retired NFL player was targeted by an online troll on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.
“Your wife is a homemaker,” the X denizen wrote. “But you can’t support butker.”
The troll then took Kylie to task for not maintaining the Kelce home properly. “And your wife is a homemaker whose home is a mess. Sorry but it is dirty and messy on television,” they added.
Next, the troll claimed the beloved Kelce brothers were running the risk of alienating NFL fans. They posited that soon, the burly siblings would only be left with millions upon millions of Taylor Swift fans. “Y’all are going to be left with nothing but swifties. You just ruined your gig. It’s a shame,” they concluded.
Jason Kelce Kills His Online Troll With Kindness
To his credit, Jason Kelce took the criticism of his wife Kylie and his lack of overwhelming support for Harrison Butker in stride.
“I think of her as my wife,” Jason wrote. “I think of her as a mother. She has an occupation, as do I, and we keep our house the best we can.”
“Our marriage is a partnership, we are equals who are figuring it out on the daily. The only expectation is that we love each other, support one another, and are committed to our family, that comes first.”
Kelce noted that having three little tykes and a slammed work life contributes to the messiness of their home.
“It is both our faults it is messy, but such is life with 3 young children, busy schedules, and neither of us being neat freaks. She also makes a mean sandwich,” he quipped.
“If being a homemaker, works for some, and that’s what they want, then hell yea, that’s awesome, more power to you,” Jason added. “I want to be clear, I’m not downplaying that at all, but that is not our family dynamic.”
