Though AJ’s cause of death has yet to be confirmed, the US Mirror notes that Simon died because of a heart attack. However, they do not mention how he suffered it.

Gattuso also advocated for Simon before his untimely passing. Simon was ranked the 36th-ranked pass rusher and expected to be selected in the upcoming NFL Draft. But still, Gattuso bragged about his player as if he was still coaching him.
“I hope the NFL doesn’t miss AJ Simon! He is a straight beast,” Gattuso wrote. “One of the best I’ve ever coached. The talent matches the numbers.” Accompanied with the praise was a list of Simon’s statistics from the Pro Day, including an impressing 4.60-second 40-yard time.
