If someone were to google Shawn Mendes, they’d face a very surprising list of results trying to figure out if Mendes is the mysterious Marshmello. Marshmello is a popular DJ and EDM producer, famous for his remixes and custom-made marshmallow helmet that he wears during public appearances; Mendes, of course, is a singer and songwriter with a loyal following of his own. Due to the DJ wearing his face-obscuring black and white headpiece, his identity had always been a debate amongst fans. But how did Mendes end up in the mix?

The Canadian singer just got caught up in the fun

No, Shawn Mendes is not Marshmello. The whole scenario began with a joke that lingered on for quite a while. At the 2018 iHeart Music Awards, Mendes appeared on stage with the same helmet that Marshmello wears. The singer disguised himself as the anonymous DJ while accepting the award for Best EDM/Dance Artist group. After accepting the award, Mendes revealed himself after removing the helmet, much to the shock of the audience. “Woah! Hot in there. Well, thank you so much!” Mendes shouted to the audience, keeping up the ruse. The spectacle caused an uproar on social media and caused quite a confusing frenzy for fans of both artists, but it was all for fun.

If Shawn Mendes isn’t Marshmello, who is?

The DJ’s real name is Chris Comstock, which was revealed in April 2017. The musician gave his real name during an interview with Forbes. Even though the world knows is true identity, the DJ still performs with his iconic headpiece while he continues to entertain fans across the globe. Most recently, the producer was named the eighth-highest paid DJ in the world, earning $21 million. The DJ also released his third album, Joytime III, in November 2019. When Shawn Mendes isn’t busy dodging rumors on being Marshmallow, the singer has been keeping busy himself. Mendes’ most popular single, “Senorita,” which he collaborated on with girlfriend Camila Cabello, has topped the charts and won several accolades. The singer recently revealed that he decided to take a break from social media to take better care of himself. “Sometimes I need to take a break from it too because it gets to me just as much as it gets to anyone else — you have to take care of yourself. It’s really really important. Make yourself come first,” the singer stated during an interview.
