Following Hayden Panettiere’s sudden death last week, True Blood alum Anna Paquin speaks out about the dangers of childhood fame.

In a post on Instagram over the weekend, the former child star stressed the importance of protecting the younger generation of Hollywood.
“It’s not a coincidence that so many former, specially pre-sexualized female ‘child stars’ have profoundly sad lives and untimely ends,” she wrote. “We were not as protected by the ‘systems’ that look great on paper, as we are supposed to be.”
Paquin also stated, “It’s a strange, small club we belong to and you are worthy of support no matter how our industry made us feel. Literally DM me. I believe you, and I will stand by your side. You aren’t alone. Let’s have each other’s backs. It might make public discourse less terrifying.”
She offered her condolences to Panettiere and to other young actresses who recently passed away, including Michelle Trachtenberg and Daveigh Chase. Trachtenberg died in 2025, while Chase passed away earlier this year. Both were in their 30s.
Although she didn’t speak out about her personal experience as a child star, Paquin wrote, “I’m speaking very specifically about the experience as a child on set that finds themselves prematurely a ‘sex object.’ I’m not implying damage is not done outside of the context of entertainment. But that is a longer post for a different moment.”
Paquin Praises Productions that Have Protected Young Actors
In a follow-up post, Paquin praised certain productions for protecting young actors both physically and mentally.
“One more thing — as an adult I’ve had the pleasure of working on productions where the welfare and mental health of young performers was handled incredibly carefully,” she wrote. “Especially around material that was intense.”
She noted, “It is possible to holistically look after the kids on set and tell complex and sometimes upsetting stories. It just has to be the top priority of the production.”
During her young acting days, Paquin appeared in hit films She’s All That and The Piano. She was also part of the X-Men franchise.
