According to Deadline, Netflix announced the pickup of the untitled drama during its May upfront presentation, with McGraw set to star and serve as an executive producer. However, the outlet reports that a source close to the actor and musician revealed he requires back surgery, which will necessitate a period of recovery.
In August, the 57-year-old had orthopedic surgery on both knees after injuring them during his tour. Because of this, he had to cancel the rest of his 2024 concert dates. It seems likely back surgery may require the country star to take all of 2025 off, too.
McGraw was to take on a physically demanding role in the Netflix series, set against the intense and competitive backdrop of bull riding. The drama follows a superstar champion (formerly McGraw) at a life-altering crossroads when a fearless young rider enters the scene. This newcomer not only challenges his beliefs but also brings buried secrets to the surface, forcing him to confront his past.
It’s Unclear Whether Tim McGraw Will Stay On in Any Capacity on the Netflix Series
McGraw is stepping down from the role ahead of an upcoming orthopedic surgery, paving the way for the part to be recast. The future of the series, a collaboration between Skydance Television and McGraw’s Skydance-backed Down Home, remains uncertain, with rumors of recasting circulating.
The bull-riding drama, created and written by Brandon Camp, features Camp as co-showrunner alongside Taylor Elmore. It’s also unclear if McGraw will stay on as a producer on the project.
Of course, McGraw has built an impressive acting portfolio over the past couple of decades. His film credits include notable titles such as Friday Night Lights, Tomorrowland, The Blind Side, Country Strong and more.
McGraw most recently appeared on screen as the lead in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel, 1883, alongside his wife, Faith Hill.
Meanwhile, it wasn’t back pain bringing the veteran country star to years recently. On Tuesday, he posted a video on Instagram featuring his daughter, Audrey McGraw. In the clip, Audrey, whom he shares with Hill, delivers a performance of the Mexican folk song “Cucurrucucú Paloma” while seated on a stage.
“Had to post this, our baby girl Audrey bringing mom and dad to tears!” the proud papa wrote.
