During an appearance on Jameela Jamil’s I Weigh With podcast, the actress revealed that Hard Rain producers wouldn’t allow her to wear a wetsuit on set.
“There were huge rain machines,” Minnie Driver recalled about the Hard Rain set. “We shot crazy hours. It was tough, like, it was a tough movie.”
However, Driver pointed out that her castmates had suits under their costumes. “I was told by the producers that I couldn’t because they wanted to see my nipples,” she claimed.
Minnie Driver further alleged that the Hard Rain producers told her there wasn’t a point in having a wet t-shirt if no one could see what was underneath it.
After her discussion with the producers, Driver complained to her agent about the situation. “People wouldn’t speak to me on the set,” she continued. “There was this kind of – I was so punished for it.”
Minnie Driver also said her complaints were leaked to the media and everyone acted as though there was nothing to complain about. “So it’s this sort of – not even existential, this gaslighting,” she noted. “Media gaslighting that’s supported by the environment that you are in. And then you have to stay in that environment.”
Minner Driver said Hard Rain took seven months to shoot and her time on set continued to be unpleasant.
“Eventually do you turn on yourself,” she admitted. “You do go, ‘It was my fault for saying anything, you stupid big mouth. You should have shut up.’ And that goes in and then alters the way in which you kind of see yourself and your natural inclination to put your hand up and go ‘This isn’t right.’”
Minne Driver Previously Said the Experience on ‘Hard Rain’ Set Gave Her a Reputation As Being ‘Difficult’
Minnie Driver previously spoke about her experience on the set of Hard Rain in 2022. She said the situation ended up giving her a reputation as being a “difficult” actress to work with.
“That followed me for a really long time,” she told The Times. “That whole idea of me being difficult. If you stood up and said, ‘This is unacceptable,’ which I routinely did, you were vilified.”
Hard Rain was produced by Ian Bryce, Mark Gordon, and Gary Levinsohn. The film follows the partner and nephew of an armored truck driver as they try to prevent three million dollars from being taken by a gang. All of this happens during a catastrophic flood caused by a severe storm.
Those who starred in the film with Minnie Driver were Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, and Randy Quaid.
