The Lindsay Clancy trial has ended in a mistrial.

The jurors were to vote on whether to hold the former labor and delivery nurse criminally responsible for killing her three children in 2023. However, the jury could not reach a unanimous decision after seven days of deliberations, according to the Associated Press.
Lindsay’s trial began in late July, three-and-a-half years after she allegedly strangled her daughter Cora and sons Dawson and Callan Clancy.
Lindsay shared the three children with her now-ex-husband, Patrick Clancy. Following the birth of the couple’s third child, Lindsay began struggling with her mental health. In September 2022, she was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. She was prescribed multiple anti-anxiety medications, including Zoloft, Ativan, and Buspar.
While taking the medication, Lindsay struggled with the medication’s side effects, specifically insomnia.
Patrick said Lindsay was still struggling with her anxiety two months after the diagnosis. In November 2022, Lindsay went to the emergency room after going two days without sleep.
Following the emergency room visit, Lindsay was prescribed more medications, including Ambien, Remeron, and Klonopin. She told her physicians that Remeron was causing her to have intrusive thoughts.
Lindsay was advised to be hospitalized after her doctor diagnosed her with bipolar disorder. Although she admitted herself to a day program for postpartum depression at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, she was quickly discharged due to “overmedication and misdiagnosis.”
Weeks later, Lindsay allegedly strangled their three children one by one with exercise bands in the basement. She then jumped out of the second-story window in an attempt to commit suicide.
Although she survived the fall, Lindsay suffered a spinal cord injury and was paralyzed from the waist down.
All three children were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Cora and sons Dawson were pronounced dead. Callan survived the strangulation but died a few days later.
Prosecutors Provided a Motive for Why Lindsay Clancy Killed Her Children Before Jury Deliberations
During closing arguments, state prosecutors provided a motive as to why Lindsay killed her and Patrick’s children.
“She was depressed, she was exhausted, she was done. She didn’t want to try anymore; she felt damaged,” Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague stated. “But those kids, those kids were her protective factor. Those kids were keeping her from ending her misery”
Sprague said the only way Lindsay could end her misery was to “remove the protective factor.” The prosecutor pointed out that there were other options that Lindsay could have taken to avoid such a tragedy.
“It was a choice to take them with her; it was a horrible choice,” Spague stated. “It is a choice that we don’t want to think about that a mother could make, because that doesn’t make us feel safe or comfortable in this world. But it’s a choice she made.”
