Shiloh recently turned 18 and took out a legal notice in the L.A. Times to announce her petition to remove “Pitt” from her surname. This step is a standard legal procedure before the court approves a name change.
Shiloh has filed to legally change her name from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie, as a newspaper notice indicates. The notice also mentions that anyone with objections to the petition should appear in court later this month. If no objections are raised, she will proceed with her name change.
Shiloh’s Legal Team Explains Reasoning Behind Her Announcement About Dropping Brad Pitt’s Name
Meanwhile, Shiloh’s legal team pushed back at some outlets for how they reported her L.A. Times announcement. Shiloh’s attorney, Peter Levine, discussed her “significant decision” and explained the reasoning behind her approach.
“The media should be more careful in their reporting,” Levine advised, per People. “Especially when covering a young adult who has made an independent and significant decision following painful events, and is merely following legal process.”
“Shiloh Jolie did not take out an ‘ad’ announcing any name change. Any press reporting that is inaccurate,” Levine added. “As Shiloh’s attorney, I am required to publish a legal notice because the law in California requires that of anyone who wants to change their name. That legal notice was published in the Los Angeles Times, as is required.”
Other children shared by Pitt and Jolie have also shied away from Brad’s last name. Pitt and Jolie’s daughter, Vivienne, was credited as “Vivienne Jolie” in the Playbill for “The Outsiders” back in May. However, it remains unclear whether the 15-year-old has legally changed her name.
Still, Shiloh is poised to be the first of Angelina and Brad’s children to officially file court documents to legally change her last name.
Alongside Maddox, Zahara, Shiloh, and Vivienne, the former couple also has two sons: Pax, who is 20 years old, and Knox, who is 15.
Brad and Angelina began dating in 2005 after working on Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Their relationship lasted 12 years, including two years of marriage. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, seeking sole custody of their children. They were declared legally single in 2019, though the divorce is still ongoing.
