Malcolm LaVergne, O.J.’s longtime lawyer and now executor of the estate, revealed to TMZ that an unforeseen tax debt is creating a new hurdle in helping to repay all the late athlete’s debts.
Among the debts include paying the Brown and Goldman families the money that O.J. Simpson was ordered to pay them during the 1997 civil trial. During that trial, Simpson was found liable for the deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman on June 12, 1994.
Although O.J. was ordered to pay the families $33.5 million, he never paid them. With interest, the amount is now reportedly up to $100 million.
LaVerge told the media outlet that the state of California has hit the Simpson estate with a massive tax lien. The total amount is $572,402.69. The lawyer shared this tax lien could “derail” the plans to settle part of the $33.5 million judgment to the Browns and Goldmans.
LaVerge also shared that his attorney met with the Goldman family and an assignee for Ron’s mother, Sharon Rufo, in early May. He pointed out that he is still investigating how much the estate is actually worth.
However, the attorney also admitted to being “blindsided” by the tax lien. He stated he was planning on going to court to deal with the situation before “it wipes out any idea” he had to pay the Goldman family anything.
He noted it “would be nice” to pay the Goldmans anything from the estate. The estate executor added that O.J.’s Heisman trophy and other possessions could be liquidated to pay the bills.
