The former frontwoman of the band Hole sat down with the UK magazine to promote her new BBC radio series, Courtney Love’s Women. During this eight-part series, Love will reflect on the women in music who have paved the path for her as a musician.
However, despite her intention to highlight women in music, Love ended up doing the opposite during her interview. In fact, she dissed several pop sensations, including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Madonna, and Lana Del Rey.
“I always wanted to be known as a b-tch,” she told The Standard. “Being liked was never my thing.”
She then went on to slam several female artists.
“It’s great that there are so many successful women in the music industry, but lots of them are becoming a cliché,” she stated. “Now, every successful woman is cloned, so there is just too much music. They’re all the same.”
Courtney Love Slams Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Madonna, and Lana Del Rey
Though she praised musicians like Patti Smith, Nina Simone, PJ Harvey, Julie London, Joni Mitchell, and Deborah Harry, Love had a ton of negativity to spew toward today’s female artists.
Specifically, Love “positively hates the idea of Taylor Swift.”
“Taylor is not important. She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist,” Love stated.
Speaking of Madonna, “I don’t like her and she doesn’t like me,” Love shared.
She then continued to list other female artists and her dissatisfaction with them.
“I haven’t liked Lana since she covered a John Denver song, and I think she should really take seven years off,” she rambled. “Up until ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’ I thought she was great. When I was recording my new album, I had to stop listening to her as she was influencing me too much.”
And while she likes “the idea of Beyoncé doing a country record because it’s about Black women going into spaces where previously only white women have been allowed,” she isn’t too keen on the record itself.
“As a concept, I love it. I just don’t like her music,” she said.
Fans React to Courtney Love’s Criticism of Top Female Artists
Many fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to discuss Love’s unmerited and harsh reviews of modern pop sensations.
“the woman is addicted to being a hater and she’s always been one to say or do whatever she thinks will get the most attention whether she even believes it or not lmao,” one person said.
“Her dragging Lana too after Lana let her open up for half of her tour a few years ago?! Shame,” another user wrote.
A third X user asked, “and courtney love is…who exactly? taylor’s incredibly talented and so deserving of her success. jealousy is a disease.”
