According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Juice is already partially finished and is about how the former athlete might not have murdered his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman on June 12, 1994.
British director Joshua Newton revealed to the media outlet that the film, which was originally titled Nicole and O.J., has about 30 minutes of filming done. Mostly done are flashback scenes featuring actress Charlotte Kirk as Nicole Brown and Station 19 star Boris Kodjoe as Simpson.
Newton shared he has been working on the project since 2015. While speaking about the plot, Newtown said it was about a real-life attorney, Douglass McCann, who was looking up various conspiracy theories about Simpson’s infamous 1995 murder trial.
The director previously stated Owen Wilson would have been perfect for the McCann role. “I actually had a meeting with him in Santa Monica,” Newton explained. “Everybody loved the script. His agent wanted him to do it. We offered him $12 million.”
However, the meeting didn’t go as well as hoped. Wilson allegedly after hearing details about the Simpson movie, “If you think I’m going to take the lead role in a movie about how O.J. didn’t do it, you’ve got to be kidding me.”
Despite the setback of not getting Wilson to sign on, Newton said he was able to find another actor for the role. He didn’t reveal who that will be.
Newton also said he is hoping to complete The Juice by Oct. 3, which would be the 29th anniversary of Simpson being officially declared acquitted of the murders.
Details about the movie surfaced just weeks after Simpson died while battling prostate cancer. He was 76 at the time of his death.
Producer Once Spoke Out About the ‘Controversial Perspective’ of the O.J. Simpson Movie ‘The Juice’
Back in 2018, PEOPLE released first-look photos of Boris Kodjoe as O.J. Simpson in the movie, The Juice.
At the time, PEOPLE reported that the film was about the tumultuous relationship between O.J. and Nicole as well as the murders of Nicole and her friend Ron.
Speaking about Kodjoe’s role as Simpson, Stephen Small, one of the producers of the movie, shared, “Boris is the same height as O.J., very tall, a very athletic presence. He transformed himself, changed his voice, he sounds pretty amazing.”
Small then discussed the casting process. “It was important to find actors that had the physical resemblance to the characters.”
The producer pointed out that the new Simpson movie will have a different and possibly controversial perspective on the athlete’s involvement in the murders.
“We’re telling the truth,” Small explained. “It’s based on factual evidence: the real story from court documents, witness interviews, and trial testimony.”
“We felt there was an injustice. A lot of people forget that the man was acquitted. He was found by 12 jurors that he did not commit the murders, but if you talk to anyone, 10 out 10 people on the street are going to go, ‘He did it.’”
Small added the movie’s production team filmed the murder as the trial portrayed it. “It’s going to be controversial but the audience can decide for themselves what ultimately happened.”
