The action film, which is officially out today, included an insensitive reference to Depp and Heard.
According to TMZ, the movie “contains a joke at one point about the volatile former couple, specifically focused on their knockdown/drag-out fights from when they were still together.”
At one point in the film, a director and movie producer walk into a star’s wrecked trailer. Referencing the mess, one of the characters says, “It’s like Amber and Johnny were just in here.”
Though that’s seemingly the only joke made about the ex-couple, fans are reportedly appalled by the jokes poking fun at domestic violence. Even though the line was meant to be comedic, it certainly didn’t land well with many watchers.
This comes after the controversial Depp v. Heard trial, which garnered worldwide attention in 2022. During the trials, the topics and accusations of domestic violence were swirling, with many viewers taking sides.
‘The Fall Guy’ Slammed for Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Joke
As TMZ put it, “The team behind Fall Guy tried to play the yearslong conflict for laughs — and, is now dealing with a ton of vitriol before the movie’s even in theaters.”
According to IMDb, the 2024 film’s storyline is as follows:
“He’s a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows, and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy, and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right?”
While the premise of the film captured many fans’ attention, the domestic violence joke achieved a negative effect.
On X, countless individuals shared their disgust toward the movie and its poor taste.
“Seriously, who thought that was a good idea to put in the movie, talk about tone-deaf,” one person said.
“It’s always very telling when people say ‘it was just a joke.’ 🙄 They show exactly why we still are where we are in society with little to no empathy for survivors/victims of domestic violence,” another user wrote.
A third person added, “Domestic violence is no joke! How can someone put something like that in a movie? Disgusting!”
