“So today I am getting a basal-cell carcinoma removed from my head,” he said in a video on Instagram.
According to Mayo Clinic, “Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma begins in the basal cells — a type of cell within the skin that produces new skin cells as old ones die off.”
This form of skin cancer is usually slightly transparent in appearance, presenting as a small bump on the skin. It’s most common on the head, face, or neck, since those areas usually get the most sun exposure.
“Most basal cell carcinomas are thought to be caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight,” Mayo Clinic continued. “Avoiding the sun and using sunscreen may help protect against basal cell carcinoma.”
