The situation occurred on the university’s south campus in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday, Aug. 11 around 8 a.m. at the 1500 block of Worthington Street. That was when shots were fired.
Upon their arrival, authorities discovered the gunman, who was suspected of breaking into a nearby home. He then decided to barricade himself, reloaded his weapon, and started firing.
Police also shared that they gave Miller “multiple verbal commands” to put down his gun, but Miller did not comply. Officers then shot at Miller. Following the first exchange of gunfire, Miller took off and broke into another building.
Multiple apartments near the Ohio State University’s campus were forced to evacuate during the shootout with the gunman.
It was further reported that at least two exchanges of gunfire between the gunman and authorities occurred before 9 a.m. but neither were injured. Hours later the gunman was pronounced dead at 1:15 p.m.
The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Asante Miller. It remains unclear how he died. No officers were injured, police said.
Authorities Search For Ohio State Robbery, Shooting Suspect Amid Gunman Shootout
Meanwhile, local media outlets report that authorities were searching for a robbery and shooting suspect just before the gunman shootout this weekend.
The robbery occurred at the University District’s Gateway Plaza in the 1500 block of North High Street just before 2 a.m. on July 7. One of the suspects, identified as Skyler Steward, was arrested. However, his accomplice fled on scene and hasn’t been found.
Steward was charged with multiple felonies, including two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of robbery, and one count of felonious assault.
The victim in the situation had been asleep when the suspects stole items from his backpack. Upon realizing what happened, the victim chased after the suspects. One of the suspects then took out a gun and shot the victim in the foot.
Although he admitted to the robbery, Steward said he was not the shooter, according to Columbus police.
Police also stated the suspected shooter was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with white lettering on the front and black shorts. The suspect, who appears to be male, does have a possible tattoo on his leg.
Police provided a photo of the suspect.
