According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the arrest came about on September 8. The VSCO had been contacted by a nurse hiring manager who had grown suspicious of Kinney’s applications.
WKMG reviewed an arrest affidavit and detailed that the hiring manager, who works at Ridecrest Health and Rehab Center in DeLand, alleged that Kinney was using fraudulent credentials to apply to jobs.
Reportedly, Kinney and the manager met back in October 2024. The manager alleged that Kinney appeared nervous and provided inconsistent documentation, including his driver’s license.
Furthermore, the affidavit alleged that Kinney was actually using his roommate’s credentials, impersonating him as he applied for jobs.
Following an investigation, the authorities found that Kinney had his license revoked back in 2022. He previously held licenses in multiple states, but he was accused of multiple violations, including “diverting drugs from his employer, driving under the influence of drugs, providing false information, and unprofessional conduct.”
Faux Nurse Arrested
Therefore, VCSO deputies posed as a hiring coordinator and set up an interview with him at a local AdventHealth. The sheriff’s office later clarified that AdventHealth was not where Kinney was applying for the nursing job.
As he arrived, however, he was immediately arrested. In bodycam footage shared by the VCSO, Kinney is seen confused, even asking, “What did I do?”
The VCSO discovered that Kinney allegedly applied for 10 to 15 nursing jobs using his roommate’s license and a fraudulent ID.
“He was hired for two positions in Seminole and Orange counties, working at each for less than a week,” the sheriff’s office said. It is unclear if Kinney was fired by his employers or if he quit himself.
As a result, Joseph Thomas Kinney was charged with two counts of practicing health care without a license. As reported by the New York Post, he is being held at Volusia County Jail on a $20,000 bond.
“The Office of the Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services was present for today’s arrest and is assisting in the follow-up investigation,” the VCSO concluded.
