Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott are not “talking marriage” as a tabloid is claiming this week. Gossip Cop has investigated the story, and we can bust it. It’s not true.
OK! has an article this week purporting that the Property Brothers star and the New Girl star are headed down the aisle. The tabloid quotes a supposed source as saying, “They’re very happy and both feel they’ve found their soulmate. They can even finish each other’s sentences!” According to this alleged source, Deschanel is ready to move in with Scott, saying, “Zooey’s been spending most of her time at Jonathan’s place anyway, so they feel like it’s time to take the next step – and not just in terms of their living arrangements.”
The unnamed source asserts that Scott is “already looking at engagement rings” and the couple is “telling friends to be ready for a big announcement early next year.” Of course, in true tabloid fashion, making up a story about a wedding isn’t enough – there always has to be some bogus bit about having kids. This story includes that too. The dubious source adds, “It’s no secret Jonathan’s been aching to be a dad” and Deschanel “would love” to have another child.
The whole story is made up. For starters, Deschanel is not officially divorced from her estranged husband, Jacob Pechenik. Deschanel and Pechenik split in September and filed for divorce in October. Scott and Deschanel met in August and started dating around the time of the breakup. The actress and her ex have two kids together, and it’s reasonable to expect their divorce, even if amicable, will take some time. The idea that Deschanel and Scott would be announcing a wedding before the divorce proceedings have even started is highly unlikely. Still, Gossip Cop checked with Deschanel’s rep, who tells us on the record that the story is false.
The tabloids have been jumping the gun on Deschanel and Scott’s romance since the beginning. In September, mere weeks into the couple’s relationship, OK!‘s sister publication, Star, alleged Deschanel and Scott were already moving in together. That story was full of holes. There was no mention of who was moving in the whom. Was Deschanel moving to Las Vegas, where Scott lives? Was Scott moving to Los Angeles, where Deschanel lives? What about Deschanel’s kids? It was all very sketchy and definitely not true, as Gossip Cop explained at the time.
This isn’t the first time a tabloid has been wrong about the couple supposedly getting engaged, either. Last month, Gossip Cop busted Life & Style, another sister publication of OK!, when it claimed Deschanel and Scott were getting engaged after attending Scott’s brother’s wedding in October. That story was also filled with bogus quotes from unnamed sources. Gossip Cop went straight to Deschanel’s rep, who dismissed it on the record.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
