The woman, identified as Katie Santry from Columbus, Ohio, revealed in a TikTok post that she and her boyfriend, Brandon, discovered the buried rug while building a fence in their yard.
“Is there a dead body in that rug? Or is it the ghost of the rug’s past?” she asked. “What on earth happened? Is there a ghost breaking my stuff?”
Santry also said that her next door neighbor died the same day she and Brandon bought the home in Oct. 2023. “That house started getting boarded up the same day this happened. So it was just a series of weird, coincidental events that, with a creative mind, could be construed as ghostly.”
After debating on what to do with the rug, Sandry then said she called the local law enforcement on Thursday, Oct. 3. They showed up with cadaver dogs not long after.
Santry further decided to livestream the entire event on TikTok, showing two cadaver dogs sitting on the spot where the rug had been found. She went on to post more details about the investigation in a separate TikTok post, which attracted 8.2 million views.
After finding the rug buried in her yard, Santry opened up to PEOPLE about the discovery. At the time, she had no idea what had happened.
“We’re just average people with normal shovels, and we couldn’t get much further than we did,” Sanry explained. “We were just kind of messing with it and realizing this is just the tip of the iceberg. The rug looks like old-school shag carpet, and we didn’t even know which direction to dig. Plus, we had trees and bushes in the way.”
What Was Inside the Buried Rug? Santry Reveals Details
The following day, Oct. 4, law enforcement returned to her home to dig in the yard. Santry was finally able to reveal what the investigators discovered.
“They have recovered the hole and this has been the most absurd, insane experience of my life,” Santry further explained. “What did they find? No, they didn’t find a body, they found a mother-effing rug with some rubber. The question remains of why the dogs sat. I don’t know. Both dogs, not just one two. I don’t know.”
She also shared, “The other question remains is who broke my laptop? I’m so confused. “There’s no body, there’s no body. Honestly, let’s praise the Lord there’s no body. I can stay in my house … everyone knows where I live but at least it’s not haunted.”
“But the mystery of the effing rug has been solved, and there is no body,” Santry then added. “And they are doing a fine job of putting my stuff back up.”
