According to a press release by the General Prosecutor’s Office of Justice of the State of Sonora, the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, June 11, in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora.
The man, identified as 43-year-old Jorge “N,” had been in a jacuzzi with Lizeth “N” when the incident occurred. The couple sustained injuries due to possibly being electrocuted.
The man unfortunately died after succumbing to his injuries while the woman was in critical condition. Authorities are investigating the incident and are looking to “determine the origin of the electric failure.”
CBS4 in Texas confirmed that the couple is Jorge Guillen and Lizette Zambrano. Guillen was from El Paso, Texas.
Zambrano remains in critical condition and the family is reportedly preparing for her to be transported back to the U.S.
Meanwhile, fellow media outlet, KTSM, confirmed that the couple was electrocuted in a Sonoran Sea Resort jacuzzi.
A witness revealed that she attempted to help the couple in the jacuzzi but was shocked as soon as she tried to get into the water. Sara Gaitan-Perez, an Arizona nurse who was staying at the resort at the time, stated that the couple was the only people in the jacuzzi when they were electrocuted.
“We had just come up from the pool, and my husband and son were in that very same [hot tub] about an hour before,” she told KTSM.
Gaitan-Perez said the woman was responsive and breathing on her own by the time she was taken to the hospital.
A GoFundMe Has Been Launched For The Couple Who Were Electrocuted at Mexico Resort
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe has been launched for the families of the couple who were electrocuted while on vacation in Mexico.
The initiative was created by Amber Romero and Sylvia Annette Sundermann. The duo stated that their best friends experienced a horrible accident.
“Jorge had a heart of gold and was always there for family and friends,” the initiative reads. “The love they shared was one for ages.”
The funds will go towards helping to bring Guillen home. It will also help with Zambrano’s medical expenses as she prepares to head back to the U.S.
“As Lizzette is in the hospital her mother Maria has remained strong and has been helping during this difficult time,” the initiative continues. “Maria will continue to support Lizzette to make sure she receives all donations. We are beyond thankful for the love and support that our friends have received.”
So far, the initiative has raised more than $33,000 from over 600 donations. It is seeking $50,000.
