Did Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon really get into a “showdown” at a press conference for “Big Little Lies” earlier this month? That’s the claim in one of this week’s tabloids. Gossip Cop looked into the situation and we can set the record straight.
During a panel at the Television Critics Association tour earlier this month, Kidman said there’s currently “no plan” for a third season of the hit HBO series. According to New Idea, Witherspoon was shocked by her co-star’s blunt admission and it caused a lot of tension between the two. “During the Q&A, Reese shot Nicole down at every opportunity and at one point Meryl [Streep] had to intervene,” a supposed source tells the magazine. Only, there’s zero proof to back up the claim, and no other entertainment outlet that covered the event said there was any friction on stage.
Still, the alleged insider further contends that Witherspoon “exploded at” Kidman backstage, accusing her “of being spiteful and selfish for not pre-warning anyone that she didn’t want to return, which would make it impossible to write a new season.” The suspicious tipster continues, “Nicole was physically shaking and stood in disbelief as Reese laid into her and she was accused of trying to sabotage Reese’s career.” The seemingly phony source matins that Kidman fought back by telling her co-star “she refused to re-join a show where she felt bullied and belittled.”
None of this is true. In fact, both actresses posted several Instagram photos from the event, and it’s clear they’re very close with each other and the rest of the “Big Little Lies” cast. Witherspoon shared an Instagram photo with her co-stars, along with the caption, “Keep your friends close, and your happy hour crew closer.”
In honor of “Galentine’s Day,” a holiday honoring female friendships, Witherspoon posted an Instagram photo with Kidman and her other “Big Little Lies” co-stars. “True love is the love you have for your sisters, your girlfriends, your circle of strong women… and the ones who tell you that you have food in your teeth,” she wrote. Kidman also celebrated the unofficial holiday with an Instagram photo of the cast, and added, “I’m loving seeing so many empowered women supporting women on my feed today… It reminds me how lucky I am to be surrounded by some truly talented ladies myself.”
Kidman, Witherspoon and the rest of their co-stars have formed a very close bond over the past few years. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time New Idea has tried to create nonexistent drama behind the scenes of “Big Little Lies.” Last year, Gossip Cop busted the magazine for falsely claiming Kidman was upset about Meryl Streep joining the second season of the hit series. The story was entirely baseless, and the same goes for this latest one.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
