TikTok has taken over as the premier social media app. Artists use it to preview new music, actors use it to preview clips from upcoming movies, and all celebs use it to showcase their everyday lives to fans.
But even though the foundation of TikTok is rooted in consumption, a new trend is encouraging users to unfollow popular celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift. But the reason for this is purely political.
New TikTok Trend Emerges Amid Protests
“Recent videos uploaded to TikTok, some gathering millions of views apiece, are urging social media users to block celebrities including Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian and others on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Spotify,” The Indianapolis Star wrote.
“The reason for the “Celebrity Block Party,” as it’s been dubbed?
TikTok users are saying they feel disillusioned with famous pop figures over the Israel-Hamas war, in which they complain celebrities aren’t using their platforms to speak out against violence in the Middle East. A flashpoint in their anger also involves the recent Met Gala in New York City.”
Taylor Swift’s Mom Nearly Nixed Signature Look
Every artist has their thing. For Beyoncé, it is her signature golden-blonde hair. For Nicki Minaj, it is anything that is the color pink. As Taylor Swift’s star has quickly arisen over the years, her signature look has become her bold red lipstick.
But the pop sensation’s signature look was almost not a thing. Swift had to get one very important person to sign off on the look. That person? Her mother, Andrea Swift.
“Her mom, [Andrea Swift], if I’m allowed to say this, was like, ‘Well, Taylor doesn’t wear red,’” Taylor’s makeup artist Gucci Westman explained to co-hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb during an appearance on the Today Show. “So I was like ‘Please, can I just try?’
The look eventually got her mom’s stamp of approval and became Taylor’s signature look.
Kim Kardashian Met Gala Look Featured Unique Detail
Of course, with the Met Gala being a gathering of the biggest celebs, Kim Kardashian was in attendance. She broke the internet with her outfit, a dress curated by world-famous designer Maison Martin Margiela.
Maison Martin Margiela had a big night on the Met Gala red carpet. In addition to fitting Kardashian, the designer also created the dress for Hollywood star Zendaya.
In a press release, the designer revealed a unique tidbit about Kim’s dress. The crystals featured in the design are made from broken mirror fragments.
“For her appearance, John Galliano created a haute couture look for Kim Kardashian,” the release reads.
“Composed of a pale grey thistle-washed boiled cashmere cardigan, a couture corset rewoven from antique silver brocade, and a skirt in tooled silver metal evoking lace, flowers, leaves, and sprigs interlinked with silver chain and floral motifs cut from mirror fragments, as well as crystal pendants, pearls and set like a piece from high-jewelry.”
