People flock to haunted houses, read chilling tales and watch heart-pounding movies all for the same reason: we liked to be scared. Yet there is always that comfort in the back of our minds that it isn't real. But what if it was real? For these 13 people, that was just the case, as they incredibly survived horrifying situations that seem straight out of a horror film.
25-year-old Marcin Kasprzak apparently decided he was done with his 27-year-old fiancée Michelina Lewandowska, and instead of simply dumping her, he dumped her literally by burying her alive. With the help with a sick friend, Marcin first attacked Michelina with a stun gun, shooting her multiple times until she passed out. He then proceeded to bound and gag the mother to his three-year-old son, placing her body into a cardboard box and burying in a shallow grave in a wooded area, topped with a 90 lb. tree. Michelina obviously woke in a panic, but with the thought of getting her child away from the man that did this to her, she used her engagement ring to claw through the box and eventually freed herself. Marcin was later convicted to 20 years in prison, and while alive, Michelina has to live on with the paranoia and constant nightmares that her former lover would come back and try again to kill her.
Holly Dunn was simply laughing and enjoying a nice night with her boyfriend Chris near a railway line in Kentucky when they were approached by a man that had unsettling, expressionless eyes. He demanded money, and they offered him what they had, but in an instance he was at their side, holding an ice pick up to Chris's neck. He then proceeded to bound and gag them and threw them in a ditch. Without a care in the world the man with the dead eyes took a huge rock and threw it on Chris's head. Chris began to gurgle blood before meeting his early and sad demise. The man then turned his attention to Holly, raping her, stabbing her in the neck with the ice pick and hitting her in the head with a wood plank until she passed out. The man mistakenly took Holly for dead and left, and when she awoke she managed to stagger to a nearby house with a broken jaw, smashed eye socket and many cuts and bruises. Police eventually linked the attack to Angel Resendiz, aka the Railway Killer, who used the train system to move between states and find new victims. He was suspected of killing up to 30 people, with Holly being the only survivor. Years later she went to testify against him, and the sight of those empty, black eyes caused her to shake so violently she had to be carried from the witness box. Resendiz was put to death by lethal injection in 2006. Holly has tried to move on the best she can, but she admits there are some things she can never forget, "like the sound of that rock hitting Christopher's head."
Back in 1959, nine experienced Russian ski hikers set out for an expedition in February in the Ural Mountains. One of the hikers became ill and had to head home early in the expedition, and he could have never imagined how incredibly lucky he was. Days after the hikers should have returned, a search party was sent out, and what they encountered still baffles researchers to this day. They found their last campsite, with tents that were cut open from the inside, but all of the personal belongings left intact. They followed the footprints in the snow and over the course of 2 months were able to find all the bodies. Despite the temperature being in close to -22F, all of the bodies had very little clothing, some just in their underwear, with them having run off with either just one shoe, socks or even barefoot. Some of the bodies had major internal injuries such as a fractured skull and major chest fractures, but it was concluded the force to produce these injuries would be similar to that of a car crash. Even more strange was the fact that there was no external wounds related to these injuries. Another member had brain damage but zero damage to their skull. And perhaps the most unsettling was that one woman was missing her tongue, eye, part of the lips, as well as facial tissue and a fragment of skull bone. It was reported by another group of hikers, who were about 50 km south of the incident, that there were strange orange spheres in the night sky to the north on the night of the incident. Similar sightings were seen in February through March by others, including the meteorology service and the military. To this day, the case remains unsolved.
The harrowing tales of Mexico's cartel and their treatment of migrants may be unfamiliar to some, but the terrifying situation is a reality to many. And in the case of Félix, a migrant from Honduras, it's a reality he knows all too well. One night the 20-year-old was walking when he was picked up by a corrupted cop and taken to a Zeta cartel safe house and left there. For weeks he was beaten with planks and given electrical shocks as the cartel contacted his poverty-stricken family demanding money for his release. Between brutal beatings, he witnessed captured members of the Gulf cartel being tortured for information, with various body parts being cut off daily until they finally decided to kill and burn their mutilated bodies. All the while Félix was threatened that that would become his fate if his family didn't pay up. This lasted for 2 months until finally his family was able to scrape together $5000, but it wasn't enough. The Zetas demanded more, and heartbreakingly, his family stopped answering the phone. After months of abuse and torture, and literally being beaten within an inch of life, Félix was amazingly spared and dumped outside the city limits. Unable to walk and his face swollen so much he could hardly talk, somebody found him and took him to a shelter for migrants. Five months after the ordeal, he finally stopped vomiting blood and his bruises healed, but he still lives in a state of fear. He is reluctant to go back to Honduras where he feels he has no future, but is too scared to try to cross illegally into the US, and of course is terrified to go out into the streets for fear of being kidnapped once more.
It was a warm, sunny day in Georgie when Aimee Copeland and a few girlfriends decided to spend the day at a local river to soak up the rays. As they waded into the water, the girls spotted a homemade zip-line, and being the adventurous girl she is, Aimee decided to give it a try. Yet on her second ride down, the wire snapped, sending her crashing onto some sharp rocks, leaving a deep gash in her outer calf. So off Aimee went to the hospital, where doctors stitched her up and sent her home. Yet over the next few days later, Aimee knew that something didn't feel right. Then three days after the incident, things took a horrific turn. Aimee woke up with blood blisters, and overnight her leg had rotted to her thigh and she couldn't speak as her "tongue was all shriveled up like a lizard tongue." Rushed to the ER by her boyfriend, doctors soon discovered she had necrotizing fasciitis, a rare flesh-eating bacteria. Now fighting for her life, the action of swift doctors were able to stop it, but in the process Aimee lost all four of her limbs - both arms below the elbow, her right leg below the knee and her left leg almost to her hip. Despite the major emotional and physical consequences, Aimee remained upbeat, learning to live with new condition.
One evening in a small town of Ohio, Brandi, 18, and Liz, 17, were at a local video store when they met Matt, a desperate sounding 27-year-old who said he had no way to get home, offering them $20 for a ride. Being from a religious background and always taught to help those in need, the girls agreed. Yet soon the girls started to get worried as Matt kept giving them different directions on where he was trying to go. When they stopped and asked him to leave, that is when he pulled out a gun and told them to drive to an isolated field. He tied Brandi to the steering wheel, then lead Liz out into the field. He produced a knife and slashed her neck at least three times, deep enough to sever her trachea. He then stabbed her in the back, neck and - five times - in the scalp. He then returned for Brandi, pulling her out of the car and leading her to where her friend's body now lay. He then forced her back into the car and drove her to a railroad car on a track and attempted to rape her. Then on a trestle above the river, he tried to snap her neck. Brandi eventually passed out from this abuse, then when she came too pretended to be dead. Her attacker finally ended it by kicking her body into the river below, where Brandi still pretended to be dead, letting her body float on the water until Matt finally left. When the coast was clear, Brandi was able to crawl up the river bank and flag down help from a passing car.
In a case that has police dumbfounded, the Kuykendall family in Washington state started receiving calls one day from a restricted number. In a scratchy voice, this stranger would tell them horrible things, like threatening to kill their pets or to slit their throats. What's even more alarming is that this mysterious caller also seemed to be watching their every move. He knew where they were in the house, what they were wearing and even what they were doing. One such instance was when the mom was cutting limes, and she received a call with the voice saying it preferred lemons. It gets even creepier from there. Besides the constant death threats and harassing, as soon as the family got police involved, the caller warned to keep them away, even leaving a voice mail of their private conversation with the cop. Feeling insecure, the family got a home security system, but of course the voice called revealing it knew the security code. It seems this horror villain had found a way to hack into the family's cell phones, as they would turn on by themselves, send texts by themselves and even change ringtones. The family had changed carriers and devices twice, but the phone calls never stopped coming.
It seemed like just a normal night when a Utah teen returned home, but instantly he knew things were not right when he couldn't find his parents or three younger siblings. After searching the house, he found the door to his parent's room locked, and once it was pried open he found all five bodies spread across the floor in an apparent murder-suicide. Yet there was no note to be found beyond a "to-do list" scribbled in a notebook, looking more as if the family had been preparing for a vacation as items such as "feed the pets" and "find someone to watch after the house" were written. Police also found a child's sand pail filled with a orange liquid of cherry-flavored methadone, dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine, acetaminophen, caffeine, doxylamine and ibuprofen. The parents had even more substances found in their systems. The reasonings for this awful incident remained murky. According to friends, the parents began to be worried about "evil in the world" and wanted to escape a "pending apocalypse." But many assumed this meant they just wanted to move somewhere and live off the grid. Even more strange was that police found letter written by the mother to one of the state's most infamous convicted killers, who was in prison for fatally stabbing his sister-in-law and her 1-year-old daughter under orders from his brother who claimed to have had a revelation from God. Soon the parents visited and formed a friendship with him. It is believed the eldest son was not included as he was 19 at the time and was already engaged.
An 11-year-old Payton had been waiting a month to attend an intimate birthday sleepover party for her longtime friend Morgan. While she was "squeaking with joy" on her way there, little did she know this was simply a ploy for Morgan and another girl, Anissa, to try and kill her. Originally the two 8th graders had it in mind to duct tape Payton in her sleep and stab her in the neck, but plans later changed to do it in a park bathroom the next morning since, "the floor had a drain for the blood to go down." On the way out to the park, Morgan grabbed a kitchen knife, and hide it inside her jacket. Yet they finally decided the best plan of action was to lead her into the woods under the guise of playing hide and seek. Once concealed by the branches and brush, Morgan tackled Payton and stabbed her multiple times, followed by Anissa taking her turn. In total, the two girls stabbed Payton 19 times. Bleeding profusely, they left her there to die, but Payton managed to crawl to a nearby bike path and found help. Rushed into immediate surgery, which lasted over 6 hours, one of the stab wounds had tore open her stomach and liver, and another was dangerously close to her heart, missing a major artery by less than a millimeter. As the doctor put it, "If the knife had gone the width of a human hair further, she wouldn't have lived." So, what caused these two young girls to want and try and kill a friend? Apparently, Payton was meant to be a sacrifice to Slender Man, the internet-created monster whom the girls convinced themselves that in order to save their own families and to be able to live with Slender Man in his mansion, they had to kill Payton.
While the real-life tale that inspired the chilling 1973 film "The Exorcist" was plenty scary in its own right, a more recent tale resulting in multiple exorcisms definitely ranks as one of the most terrifying. Like a 9-year-old boy walking backwards up a wall in front of a family case manager and hospital nurse terrifying. And this one has a boat load of official reports to back it up, including a 800-page report by the Department of Child Services who were sent to investigate, along with witnesses ranging from police, DCS personnel, psychologists, family members and a Catholic priest. While the Indianapolis Star published a lengthy account of all the harrowing details, the story begins with a mother and her three young children moving into a one-story home on a quiet street, and soon experiencing some very strange occurrences: hundreds of flies attracted to the home in the dead of winter, sounds of footsteps and doors opening, shadowy figures. Then things took a drastic change for the worse. The children's eyes would bulge and they would sport evil grins, and they would speak in low voices about how everyone would die. One clairvoyant who examined the home said it was besieged by more than 200 demons. In the end Ammons had three exorcisms before she finally had peace.
24-year-old Bridget Kelly was a loving, first grade teacher living on her own in Killeen, Texas. One night she was preparing to snuggle in for a much needed night of rest when the front door of her apartment was kicked in by an armed intruder. Instantly thoughts of her day and of peaceful slumber were violently replaced with fear for her life. The intruder then forced her into her car, making her drive them to the closet ATM and having her withdraw $200. All the while Bridget cried, and pleaded for her life, offering the man more money, her car, anything at all that he wanted. She opened up about her life, about her love for the kids she taught, anything she said, to help him see her as a human being. The man simply ordered her to shut-up, then took over and drove her to an abandoned field, where he raped her. After all of this, he ordered her out of the car and told her to walk, making sure to keep her back to him the entire time. And then she felt it. The first bullet sinking into her back. Bridget instantly dropped to the ground, and tried to play dead, hoping against all hope he would just leave. But he didn't. He then approached her motionless body, and fired two more shots before leaving her there to die. Miraculously, Bridget was able to make it to some nearby houses, and after the first ignored her cries, eventually got help. She then had to spend the next 6 hours in surgery while doctors removed the bullets from her back. As for her attacker, the man stupidly returned to the spot of the attack with some friends to gloat and show off what he thought would be a dead body. Instead they were greeted by police, who quickly put him into custody. He is now serving a life term in prison.
Confessing the harrowing tale in an AskReddit thread, a high school senior was enjoying the warm air through her open bedroom window one May evening when she heard yelling outside. She ignored it until she heard, "I wanna f--k you!" at which point she looked outside and saw her neighbor standing at the fence that divided their yards, looking up at her open window. While understandably freaked out, she convinced herself he was looking and yelling at something else and neglected to tell anyone. The very next morning she was home alone getting ready for school when she hears her dog start to bark in their back yard, sounding more vicious than normal. Next she hears the back door open. While she initially thought it was just her mom, in the back of her mind she couldn't shake the feeling that it was her neighbor. As she put it, "To this day I am SO thankful that I had listened to that small voice in the back of my head." She went to check, and saw him standing in the kitchen with an 8-inch knife in his hand. With a crazy look of lust in his eyes he simply said, "Don't move." Despite her body feeling heavy and immobile, she was able to run to the safety of a neighbor's home. When the police arrived, they found the man, a relapsing alcoholic, in his home. He had drank 2 liters of vodka the night before and admitted that he had been watching the girl for months through her bedroom window. When the police searched his home, they found photos he had taken of her that explained in explicit detail what he wanted to do to her.
When the Broaddus family purchased a charming house in a cozy New Jersey neighborhood, they had thought they have found their dream home. Yet not even three days after they received the keys did this dream home turned into a living nightmare. They received the first in a series of letters from a person whose only identified themselves as "The Watcher." This mysterious stranger claimed that it was his responsibility to watch the home, writing, "My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched in the 1960s. It is now my time." While this was plenty unsettling on its own, more letters began to pour in, now referring to the couple's three children as "young blood," asking, "Have they found out what is in the walls yet?" and, "Who has the bedrooms facing the street? I'll know as soon as you move in. It will help me to know who is in which bedroom then I can plan better." The Watcher also claimed to have now learned all of their names, and said the many doors and windows of the property, "allow me to watch you and track you as you move through the house." Proving too terrifying, the family refused to move in for their own safety, and now are desperately trying to rid themselves of a house that many now know as "The Watcher" house.
