Lizzo has some unexpected talents that have nothing to do with her singing, rapping or twerking. The “Truth Hurts” artist has classical training on an instrument that few would suspect: the flute! Singer, rapper and flutist – Lizzo is a triple threat in the most surprising way possible. It’s an unusual choice in instrument, especially for as bold a woman as Lizzo, but she makes it work.
Time‘s Entertainer of 2019 picked up the flute when she was only 10-years-old, and she continued honing her craft, eventually attending the University of Houston where she studied classical flute performance. It’s a big leap from classical flute to the sort of music Lizzo performs now, but she still manages to show off her instrumental chops on occasion. Lizzo often brings her flute – appropriately named Sasha Flute – with her to concert, though it doesn’t often appear in her recorded music.
Sasha Flute has gained so much notoriety on her own that she’s received her very own, verified Instagram account. The page mostly features videos of Lizzo playing the famous silver flute both in concert and in casual settings, as well as various candids of the flute behind the scenes. It sure does live a lavish life for a woodwind!
The 2019 Soul Train Music Award winner for Album/Mixtape of the Year often posts videos featuring Sasha Flute to her own social media pages. Lizzo sometimes plays instrumental covers of other hit hip hop songs like Migos’ “Mask Off,” and A$AP Rocky’s “Praise the Lord,” a cover which was then retweeted by Rocky himself.
Lizzo doesn’t always use her flute in a purely musical nature, often she uses Sasha Flute as a comedic prop. She posted a video to her Instagram account playing a few improvised bars, then called out Will Ferrell, asking him to join her in a jazz flute duel. Ferrell, in character as Ron Burgundy, answered the challenge, and Lizzo posted his video response to her page.
It’s surprising that Lizzo plays the flute, which is historically seen as a delicate instrument, when Lizzo is the complete opposite. With her strong message of self-love, and brash, vivacious personality, she’s not exactly anyone’s idea of innocent or delicate. But somehow the two opposites work in perfect harmony.
It’s strange that one of the most dynamic ways Lizzo marks her territory as an artist is with an elegant woodwind like a flute when she has a reputation as a brassy broad. It’s just another way that Lizzo takes established norms, flips them on their heads and creates something unique and all her own.
